Expanding the network of mangrove stewards!
On October 3-4, 2024, the Fisheries and Marine Sciences Department, in collaboration with the Research and Developmemt Services, Aklan Research Center for Coastal Studies, and the Association of Fisheries Students, conducted a training on mangrove rehabilitation and ecosystem management.
The event took place at the Katunggan It Ibajay Mangrove Ecopark for the lectures and mangrove species identification, on Isla Kapispisan Mangrove Park and Fishery Sanctuary for the familiarization tour of the proposed research, extension, and eco-tourism site, and in ASU-Dumlog Fishpond for the field application of the mangrove out-planting. The training capped with a closing program where the participants reported their output from the training and a presentation of the background of Isla Kapispisan as a mangrove rehabilitated are from an abandoned fishpond.
Participants of the training included representatives from the local government unit (LGU), the Pinamuk-an Oyster Growers Association, DENR-Environmental Management Bureau, and Metallica Ship Building Services. The ASU faculty and staff involved in Isla Kapispisan research, and students from the Association of Fisheries Students and Future Leaders of the Philippines also did not miss this chance!
This training was in cooperation with Metallica Marine Consultancy and Fabrication Services and the ASU Gender and Development Services Office. It was funded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through the ASU Research and Development Service Office, under the Aklan State University Agri-Ecotourism Circuit for Enhancement and Promotion Program, specifically focused on Human Capability Development for Isla Kapispisan.
