The DOST-MIMAROPA, through the PSTO-Romblon and the DOST-SARAI MIMAROPA Team, in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos (UPLB) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Odiongan, facilitated the installation of an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in Barangay Anahao, Odiongan, Romblon, on August 12, 2026.
The AWS is a ground-based meteorological monitoring system designed to automatically collect localized weather data, including rainfall, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and atmospheric pressure. The data generated by the station can support the development of localized weather and agricultural advisories, crop suitability assessments, and seasonal agricultural planning.
By providing site-specific weather information, the AWS strengthens the capacity of LGUs and agricultural stakeholders to make timely, data-driven decisions. Access to localized weather data can support disaster preparedness, climate change adaptation, crop management, and the efficient use of agricultural resources, particularly as farming communities respond to increasingly variable weather and climate conditions.
As part of the continuing implementation of Project SARAI in the province, the DOST-SARAI MIMAROPA Team also conducted a site visit in Barangay Tambac, Romblon, Romblon, on August 13, 2026. The visit aimed to assess and validate the proposed location for the installation of another AWS, taking into consideration site conditions and its suitability for reliable weather monitoring.
During the visit, the team also paid a courtesy call to the Municipal Agriculture Office of Romblon to provide updates on the AWS site visit and discuss the necessary preparations for its installation. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen the local implementation of Project SARAI, sustain collaboration, maximize the use of weather and agricultural information, and promote science- and technology-based approaches toward smart and climate-resilient farming practices in the municipality.
Through Project SARAI, DOST-MIMAROPA continues to bring science-based agricultural information, localized weather data, and decision-support tools closer to communities, helping LGUs and farmers better anticipate weather-related risks, strengthen agricultural planning, and build a more climate-resilient agriculture sector in MIMAROPA.
