Today, as we commemorate the life and legacy of AndrΓ©s Bonifacio, we are reminded that the struggle he began for genuine national democracy remains unfinished. His fight continues, especially now, when the massive plunder of our nationβs wealth persists under systems that benefit only the powerful few.
βThe Marcoses and the Dutertes have long faced allegations of corruption and abuse of power, and that their drive to preserve their positions in the political hierarchy is a social cancer that continues to harm Eastern Visayas and the entire country,β Paul Lachica, BAYANβSB Coordinator said.
Lachica added that Eastern Visayas is poor and will remain poor so long as political dynasties like the Marcos-Romualdez clan continue to exploit the regionβs land and resources. He cited the Cancabato Bay reclamation project, undertaken by Sunwest Construction and reported to cost 4.5 billion pesos, with around 1 billion pesos already released. According to him, while such projects proceed without meaningful consultation or transparent accounting, farmers in Samar experience bombings, damaged rice fields, and a lack of substantial government support. He stressed that there are no significant programs for farmers and workers in a region dominated by bureaucrat capitalists.
He also noted that the national situation mirrors this condition. Past and ongoing investigations, including Commission on Audit reports on spending irregularities, the Pharmally procurement controversy under the Duterte administration, and issues involving multibillion-peso confidential funds, have deepened public distrust and revealed how entrenched corruption diverts resources away from social services, rural development, and national industrialization.
We reiterate our call that all those involved in corruption scandals must resign. However, resignations alone are not enough. We must transform the system itself, not simply replace the names of those who hold power.
Power belongs to the people. We must fight for a patriotic and democratic government. We must end the rule of foreign and elite interests, dismantle political dynasties, and hold accountable all officials who have committed corruption and abuses of power. We must abolish the pork barrel system and all roots of corruption in government. We must achieve genuine peoplesβ power, especially for workers, farmers, the urban poor, indigenous peoples, youth, women, and all oppressed sectors.
LAHAT NG SANGKOT DAPAT MANAGOT!
MARCOS-DUTERTE, PATALSIKON!
DUNOT NGA SISTEMA, BAG-UHON!
