The 2026 PISKAY โ€“ Davao del Sur Division Athletic Association (DavSurDAA) Meet officially opened on September 3, bringing together young athletes from the nine municipalities of Davao del Sur in a province-wide celebration of sportsmanship, talent, and athletic excellence.

Hosted by the Municipality of Malalag under the leadership of Municipal Mayor Maria Zorahayda T. Valentin, the opening ceremonies gathered athletes, coaches, school officials, provincial and municipal local government officials, and other stakeholders in support of the divisionโ€™s premier athletic competition.

The opening was also highlighted by the presence of Coach Jess Linus Evangelio, Off-Campus Coach of Ateneo de Davao University, who served as guest speaker and shared his experiences in coaching and developing young athletes.

Coach Jess inspired the athletes by emphasizing that success in sports goes beyond medals, trophies, and victories. For him, the true measure of a coachโ€™s success is seeing athletes transform their lives through sports and use their experiences to pursue their dreams.

Meanwhile, Mayor Valentin acknowledged the challenge of preparing for the DavSurDAA Meet, recognizing its importance as one of the provinceโ€™s prestigious sporting events. She expressed appreciation to the athletes, coaches, organizers, and stakeholders whose collective efforts made the opening and the entire competition possible.

Adding color and excitement to the ceremonies were performances by Jecel Divinagracia Taray, who rendered the popular โ€œPanawagtawag Tu Yuta,โ€ also known as the Palaro tu Agsur song, and Maan Chua, the โ€œQueen of Festival Songs,โ€ who entertained the crowd with her musical performances.

The 2026 DavSurDAA Meet runs from September 3 to 7, with competitions being held at various venues throughout the Municipality of Malalag. The event brings together the provinceโ€™s young athletes in pursuit of excellence while fostering discipline, camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the values gained through meaningful participation in school sports.

Through PISKAY, Davao del Sur continues to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents, build character, and take meaningful steps toward achieving their sporting aspirations.

To strengthen the preparedness and response of schools against active shooting and other active-threat incidents and ensure the continuity of learning, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Davao del Sur convened key law enforcement, disaster risk reduction, and local government partners for a convergence on school safety and emergency preparedness.

The convergence brought together SDO Davao del Sur personnel, the Davao del Sur Police Provincial Office, Municipal Police Chiefs, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs), and municipal mayors to reinforce inter-agency coordination and strengthen school security measures.

โ€œWe are not enough. We cannot do it alone. We need the support of local agencies and partners to prevent these incidents,โ€ said Schools Division Superintendent Lorenzo E. Mendoza, CESO V, underscoring the need for a whole-of-community approach to school safety.

The Davao del Sur Police Provincial Office and Municipal Police Stations committed to provide technical assistance to schools and coordinate with school administrators in developing contingency plans and response measures for possible active-threat incidents.

The PNP also committed to support schools in conducting learner symposiums focused on preventive practices and appropriate responses during active-threat situations.

According to the Davao del Sur PNP, Security Surveys and Interventions (SSI) have already been conducted in selected schools, with recommendations provided to further strengthen their security measures.

As part of the Divisionโ€™s security preparedness, the SDO Davao del Sur has mandated all public elementary and secondary schools to procure metal detector devices to enhance security screening in school premises.

During the convergence, the Division also presented the School Contingency Plan for Active Attacks, led by Division DRRM Focal Person Joveth G. Tubiano, which outlines preparedness, response, coordination, and recovery measures in the event of an active-threat incident.

The Ceremonial Nationwide Simultaneous Active-Threat School Safety Drill is scheduled on September 3, 2026, at Padada National High School as part of the continuing efforts to strengthen the readiness of schools and response agencies.

Through the convergence, the SDO Davao del Sur seeks to establish stronger coordination mechanisms among schools, law enforcement agencies, disaster risk reduction offices, and local governments to protect learners and personnel and sustain the delivery of education even during emergencies.

Learners of Pedro A. Arches National High School gained a deeper understanding of Mt. Apoโ€™s geological, environmental, and cultural significance as they engaged with international UNESCO experts during the validation of the mountainโ€™s bid for UNESCO Global Geopark recognition on August 18.

The school welcomed Dr. Guy Martin Martini of France and Mr. Chenggong Zhang of China, who interacted with learners and explored how the story and heritage of Mt. Apo are integrated into classroom lessons and learning experiences.
The engagement gave students a rare opportunity to connect directly with international experts and see their classroom learning from a broader perspective. Lessons in science, environmental protection, culture, and sustainability became more meaningful as learners discovered how these concepts are applied in actual efforts to conserve and promote Mt. Apo.

Through the interaction, learners also gained a clearer appreciation of Mt. Apo beyond its identity as the countryโ€™s highest peak. They were introduced to its value as a site of geological, ecological, and cultural significance, and to the importance of protecting its heritage for future generations.

The visit further demonstrated how local learning can connect to global initiatives. By engaging with experts involved in the UNESCO validation, learners saw how their knowledge, experiences, and understanding of their own environment can contribute to broader conversations on conservation and sustainable development.

Pedro A. Arches National High School expressed its appreciation to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its continued support in the conservation, protection, and promotion of Mt. Apoโ€™s natural heritage.

As Mt. Apoโ€™s story reaches the global community, the UNESCO engagement has given learners not only new knowledge but also a stronger sense of connection to the mountain they study, value, and are called to help protect.
