L O O K || Engr. Sheila Amigo Honored Among 2026 Metrobank Outstanding Teachers

Excellence, dedication, and commitment to the teaching profession took center stage as Engr. Sheila Amigo, a secondary teacher of Siay National High School, Zamboanga Sibugay, was recognized among the Outstanding Teachers in the 2026 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Search for Outstanding Teachers during the awarding ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Taguig City.

The prestigious recognition celebrates teachers who have demonstrated exemplary performance, dedication, and meaningful contributions to the lives of their learners and communities.

For DepEd Zamboanga Peninsula, Engr. Amigo’s achievement is a source of immense pride and joy, bringing honor not only to Siay National High School and the Schools Division of Zamboanga Sibugay but also to the entire DepEd Region IX.

Her recognition reflects the profound impact of teachers who go beyond the classroom to inspire, nurture, empower, and transform the lives of learners. Her journey exemplifies how passion, purpose, and dedicated service can create a lasting difference in the education community.

The achievement also recognizes the countless hours of work, sacrifices, challenges overcome, and lives touched throughout her teaching career. Her success serves as an inspiration to fellow educators who continue to serve with compassion, commitment, and a humble heart.

The DepEd Region IX community likewise acknowledged the support of Schools Div. Supt. Jun Batan, Asst. Schools Div. Supt. Ma. Coleen Emoricha, Public Schools District Supervisor Hope Acuesta, and the School Principal of Siay National High School, whose leadership and support contributed to Engr. Amigo’s development and success.

Adding significance to the occasion was the presence of distinguished DepEd officials, including Secretary Sonny Angara, Undersecretary Carmelas Oracion, and Assistant Secretary Malcolm Garma, whose support and recognition of the invaluable contributions of teachers further highlighted the importance of honoring excellence in the teaching profession.

The Regional Office IX also expressed its appreciation to Regional Director, Dr. Ronelo Firmo and Assistant Regional Director, Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde for their unwavering support, trust, and approval that enabled the region to witness and celebrate this momentous occasion.

For the Human Resource Development Division (HRDD), the recognition underscores the importance of nurturing and celebrating the professional excellence of teachers. HRDD Chief, Dr. Marietta Anhaw shared that witnessing the achievement was both a privilege and an honor, emphasizing that when one teacher succeeds, the entire organization celebrates.

More than an individual accolade, Engr. Amigo’s recognition represents the collective achievement of the educators and education stakeholders of Zamboanga Peninsula. It is a reminder that every lesson patiently taught, every learner encouraged, every act of kindness, and every sacrifice quietly made can leave a lasting legacy.

Congratulations, Engineer Sheila Amigo!

L O O K || Partners Caravan Bring Knowledge Channel TVs to Five Schools in Basilan, Zamboanga City

Five public schools in Basilan and Zamboanga City received Knowledge Channel Television packages during the conduct of the School Caravan Provincial Launch and TV Turnover held Thursday, September 3, at the Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga City.

Meantime, Isabela City National High School (NHS) and Basilan NHS each received a 55-inch Knowledge Channel TV package. The turnover was witnessed by Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin Hataman, Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Laarni T. Villanueva, teachers, and other education stakeholders.

Further, three Zamboanga City schools—Ayala NHS, Talon-Talon NHS, and Zamboanga City NHS Main—also received the same package, which were formally accepted by their respective school heads.

The initiative is made possible through the partnership of the Knowledge Channel Foundation, BPI Foundation, and FinEd Unboxed, who provided schools with Knowledge Channel TVs equipped with video lessons, educational e-games, and e-guides to support teaching and learning.

Top executives and representatives of the partner organizations were present during the turnover and conducted a short technical orientation on the proper use and features of the Knowledge Channel TV.

DepEd Assistant Regional Director Dr. Gregorio Cyrus R. Elejorde graced both turnover activities, underscoring the Department’s support for partnerships that provide innovative and accessible learning resources to public schools.

HAPPENING TODAY || Zamboanga City Teachers Gear Up for Pilot Reading Program Implementation

A total of 695 elementary school teachers from the East Coast of Zamboanga City with their school heads participated in the first batch of the "One-Day Orientation on the Pilot Implementation of the Reading Program" for Elementary Grades 1 and 2 of the Schools Division of Zamboanga City held today, September 3 at Astoria Hotel.

The activity will continue tomorrow, September 4, with 694 participants as the second batch from the West Coast. This is a significant step toward strengthening foundational literacy among beginning readers in the city.

Initiated by the DepEd Central Office through the Learning Systems Strand (LSS), the program supports the implementation of School-Initiated Interventions (SII) under the Flexible Learning Program (FLP). It aims to improve the reading proficiency of learners in the early grades through the provision of structured reading materials, teacher support, and systematic monitoring mechanisms.

This orientation is designed to familiarize teachers and school heads with the program design, implementation arrangements, and monitoring requirements, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and strategies to effectively carry out the intervention in their respective schools.

The event brought together DepEd Central Office, Regional, and Division officials, as well as representatives of partner organization, Chalkboard Inc., including facilitators from the United Kingdom, who shared their expertise and provided technical assistance during the session.

Meanwhile, Assistant Regional Director. Dr. Gregorio Cyrus R. Elejorde emphasized the potential impact of the intervention in addressing the reading challenges faced by learners in Zamboanga City.

“The launching of this intervention hopefully will be impactful as we need help to address our problem pertaining to reading for our learners in Zamboanga City,” Elejorde said.

He further expressed that the initiative will contribute to building a "culture of reading" across the city.

“Out of this, we can build a city of readers—more teachers to teach with passion and more communities to support this program,” he added.

Moreover, Chief of the Curriculum Learning and Management Division(CLMD), Dr. Eugenio B. Penales underscored the value of the program as an additional support mechanism for teachers and learners. He further described the initiative as an important input that can help address existing gaps in reading instruction and learner performance.

The session proper featured the presentation of four learning modules, facilitated by Edison David, Aysha Freire, Rebecca Stephenson, and other members of the Chalkboard Inc. team. The modules provided participants with essential information and guidance on the implementation of the pilot reading program, including the roles of teachers and school heads and the mechanisms for monitoring learner progress.

Most recent Air Quality update at 7:00AM monitoring.

The PM2.5 level is currently showing a spike, possibly due to the rising temperature, which can affect the dispersion and movement of particulate matter in the atmosphere.

We are hopeful that the levels will improve later as wind movement increases and the particulate matter disperses toward higher elevations.

For now, we encourage everyone to stay informed and cautious, but there is no need to panic.

We will continue monitoring the air quality and provide updates as conditions change.

Stay indoors. Stay Updated.
