Celebrating the 56th Founding Anniversary of the MNLF: A Tribute to Prof. Nur Misuari
56 years ago today, a man from Tapul, Sulu, who was a political science professor of the University of the Philippines founded what is now known as The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a significant liberation organization in the history of the Philippines. That man is Prof. Nur Misuari. The MNLF has been instrumental in advocating for the development of the Bangsamoro homeland (Hulah), the rights and welfare of the Moro people (Bangsa), and their Islam religion (Agama). It owes much of its success to its founding chairman, Prof. Nur “Maas” Misuari.
Born on March 3, 1939, in Tapul, Sulu, Maas Nur Misuari is a visionary leader, and politician who devoted his life to the Moro cause. Misuari's leadership was instrumental in establishing the MNLF and in steering its course towards advocating for egalitarianism. Peace agreements have been signed between the MNLF represented by Nur Misuari and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP), including the 1996 Final Peace Agreement under the auspices of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Under Misuari's leadership, the MNLF has seen successes with numerous challenges since its inception in 1972. Despite these hurdles, the organization has remained steadfast in its mission, fighting for Hulah, Bangsa, and Agama.
Misuari's legacy as the founding chairman of the MNLF is a testament to his selfless sacrifices, dedication and commitment to the Moro cause. As we celebrate the 56th founding anniversary of the MNLF, it is fitting to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Nur Misuari, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping the organization's course and ensuring its continued relevance in the fight for the right to self-determination of the Bansamoro people in Mindanao.
