Eastern Visayas is entering a demographic "sweet spot" and it could be a game-changer for the region's economy.

Census data show the region's dependency ratio dropped from 64.18% (2020) to 56.94% (2024) as the working-age population grew to 63.99%, meaning more Filipinos in Eastern Visayas are now in their productive years, with fewer dependents to support.

But CPD VIII cautions that the window won't stay open forever. Investing now in education, health, and jobs is key to turning this into a real "demographic dividend."

Young mothers in Catbalogan City gained valuable knowledge on family planning and responsible parenthood through a one-day orientation conducted as part of the celebration of Family Planning Month.

The activity brought together young mothers from across the city to learn about family planning options, responsible parenthood, and the importance of creating a healthy and nurturing environment for their children.

The activity was jointly supported by the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) VIII, Catbalogan City Population and Youth Development Office (CPYDO), and City Health Department (CHD), highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts in providing young families with information and access to essential family planning services.

CPD VIII served as a resource speaker during the session, emphasizing the role of parents in promoting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their children. The discussion also highlighted how informed family planning decisions can help parents better prepare for the needs and responsibilities of raising a family.

Karen B. Tolentino, Information Officer II of CPD VIII, reminded the participants of their responsibilities as parents and caregivers, stressing the importance of ensuring that children are born into and raised in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.

Meanwhile, CHD discussed the different family planning methods available to families, providing participants with information to help them make informed decisions based on their individual needs and circumstances.

The learning session was complemented by the availability of family planning services at the CHD Medical Clinic. Following the orientation, three young mothers availed themselves of family planning methods on-site, providing a direct link between education and access to health services.

The activity underscored the shared commitment of CPD VIII, CPYDO, and CHD to empower young mothers with accurate information and accessible services that support responsible parenthood, healthy families, and the well-being of children.

The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) Region VIII, in partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region VIII, successfully conducted a Kalalakihang Tapat sa Obligasyon at Responsibilidad sa Pamilya (KATROPA) Session for LTO personnel on August 14, 2026, at the LTO Building, Candahug, Palo, Leyte, in celebration of National Family Planning Month.

The activity, held as part of the month-long observance, provided male employees a dedicated space to deepen their understanding of responsible parenthood, active fatherhood, shared family responsibilities, and the vital role men play in building healthy, harmonious families.

Through candid discussions and interactive activities, participants were encouraged to reflect on their responsibilities not only as employees and public servants, but as partners, fathers, and pillars of their families and communities.

LTO Regional Director Atty. Ledwino R. Macariola graced the session and underscored the importance of the KATROPA initiative among men in the workplace, especially as the nation marks Family Planning Month. He emphasized that the values and principles of KATROPA should not remain confined to the office, but should be carried home and into the community, inspiring men to become more responsible, caring, and actively engaged partners in family planning and family life.

The KATROPA Session marks another milestone in the growing partnership between CPD Region VIII and LTO Region VIII, reinforcing their shared commitment to responsible parenthood, gender-responsive family development, and stronger Filipino families.

As Family Planning Month continues to be observed nationwide, the KATROPA movement hopes to inspire more men across government service to embrace their roles as engaged partners, proving that family planning is not just a women's concern, but a shared responsibility for building healthy, empowered, and resilient Filipino families.
