Please avoid doing the friction trick on our walls — it causes damage. Let’s take care of our classrooms together. 🙏💙
A growing number of schools have issued formal warnings and restrictions after a viral “friction stick” trend encouraged students to press and drag objects along walls to make them cling using friction and adhesion. What began as a playful online science challenge has resulted in unexpected property damage, prompting administrators to intervene. School officials explained that although students may have participated out of curiosity or amusement, the behavior led to scratched paint, worn surfaces, and visible markings across hallways and classrooms. The issue has become widespread enough that several institutions are now implementing bans, reinforcing school policies to protect facilities and promote responsible experimentation.
Physics teachers clarified that the damage is rooted in fundamental scientific principles. When an object is pushed and rubbed against a wall, friction grinds microscopic particles from both surfaces, creating scratches and weakening paint layers. Adhesion then occurs when particles from the object or the wall stick to each other, leaving behind residue and amplifying deterioration. Experts emphasize that while hands-on science exploration is valuable, it must be done safely, intentionally, and with respect for school property. Administrators hope the incident becomes an opportunity for students to understand how basic physics operates in real-life settings and to encourage responsible scientific curiosity.
