Today, October 1, I remember and celebrate my brother B**g—not only for the public service he gave, but more importantly, for the person he was to our family.

Even as a child, B**g already had the qualities of a leader. He was disciplined, organized, and very particular about the things he cared about. He also had many good friends, and he was someone people genuinely enjoyed being around.

As he grew older, some things never changed. He was meticulous about his videos, magazines, and other things he valued. He liked keeping things in order and had his own way of doing things. But when it came to clothes, he was very simple. Madalas, pantalon na maraming pockets ang suot niya 'pag pumapasok.

B**g was quiet and soft-spoken, but he had a good sense of humor. He loved music and had a band with three others. He enjoyed performing and, of course, making people laugh. Minsan nga lang, corny ng jokes niya. But that was B**g.

He was also a good public speaker. He may have been quiet in his everyday life, but when he had something to say, he knew how to say it.

Even with food, B**g had his own way. Mapili siya sa pagkain and would often have his own food. These might seem like small details, but these are the things that make someone memorable. The little things that were simply B**g.

He studied and lived in the United States, but remained grounded and simple in the way he lived and dealt with people. He eventually devoted himself to public service, serving the people of Olongapo and Zambales.

But beyond everything he accomplished, B**g was a father and a brother. He was especially devoted to his only child, Jane, and his love for her was something everyone close to him could see.

For me, though, B**g will always be my brother first.

I remember the music, the jokes, his particular ways, the good friends he made, and all the years we shared as a family. These are the memories I hold on to.

Happy 79th birthday in heaven, B**g.

You are remembered, you are missed, and you will always be my brother.

I first learned about Wenceslao Vinzons in 4th grade. As I grew older, I came to know more of his heroism—leading guerrilla resistance against the Japanese during World War II, while also championing Filipino nationalism, Maphilindo, and the use of Bahasa as our national language.

We shared something in common: we were among the youngest delegates to our respective Constitutional Conventions. Tragically, we both lost loved ones to violence—Vinzons lost his entire family during the war, while my father was assassinated.

Many Filipinos may no longer know the story of Wenceslao Vinzons. That is why I had a bust of him put up—to honor his memory and remind future generations of the young Filipino who gave his life for our country.

I had the opportunity to speak for the Fraternal Order of Eagles about something I believe is important—not just for their organization, but for the country.

I told them that an organization should have a common purpose and a common vision. With the number of Eagles across the country, there is so much that can be done if people are united toward something bigger than themselves.

For me, it has never been about the title or the position. It is about action.

I shared with them how, growing up with ancestral roots from the Tagles, I learned about the importance of people coming together for a common cause. Our history is full of examples of what Filipinos can accomplish when they set aside differences and work toward one goal.

That is what I hope to see from the Eagles. Your symbol is an eagle—an animal that flies high and sees far. I believe that should also be the way you look at the country. Don't just look at what is happening inside your organization. Look at your community. Look at the country. Ask yourselves: What can we do?

I also talked about something that has always bothered me: our tendency to wait for somebody else to solve our problems. We need less of the culture of simply asking, “Ano ang makukuha ko?” and more of “Ano ang maitutulong ko?”

We need more Filipinos who are courageous, caring, compassionate, competent and competitive—people who are willing to volunteer, take responsibility and act even when nobody is telling them to do so.

I have seen this many times through the Philippine Red Cross. When disasters happen, our volunteers don't wait for perfect conditions. They go where people need help. They serve hot meals, provide water, rescue communities, assist the injured, give blood and help families recover. That is what volunteerism means to me.

I believe organizations like the Eagles can do the same. You don't need to wait for a disaster to happen before you start preparing. You can organize your people, train your volunteers, build partnerships and be ready to respond when your community needs you.

I told them about the work we have been doing in the Red Cross because I wanted them to see what is possible when people decide to act.

For me, leadership is not about being recognized. Respect is earned by what you do. You can have the title, the position and the credentials, but at the end of the day, people will remember what you actually did.

My challenge to the Eagles is simple: find your common purpose, unite around it and put it into action. I hope we can work together through volunteerism and programs like RC 143, so that more people are ready to help when their communities need them.

We have a lot of problems in this country. But we also have millions of Filipinos who are willing to help. We just have to organize them, give them a purpose and, most importantly, give them the opportunity to act.

The sudden passing of Gov. Dakila Carlo “Dax” Cua is a heartbreaking loss. Dax had so much promise and so much more to give, yet in the time he was given, he accomplished so much and touched many lives through his service to his people and the Philippine Red Cross. It is difficult to accept that someone who still had so much ahead of him is now gone. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. Rest in peace, Dax. You will be deeply missed.

I salute the people of Tarlac—our blood donors, volunteers, and partners—for making your province a model humanitarian community. Hindi kailangang pilitin ang tao dito to give blood; you give because you understand that one donation can mean another person’s chance to live. The humility of giving blood is not a transaction—it is a transformation.

Maraming salamat sa 532 blood awardees, lahat ng volunteers, at sa pamunuan ng Philippine Red Cross Tarlac Chapter. Let us continue this legacy of volunteerism, blood donation, and service!

GORDON URGES STRONGER PRC-PCS DISASTER RESPONSE SYSTEM

Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon is pushing for a priorly ordained, year-round roster of volunteer surgeons who can be immediately mobilized during disasters and mass-casualty incidents, strengthening the 14-year partnership between the PRC and the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS).

Gordon said the system would ensure that PRC and PCS would not have to determine whom to call only when disaster strikes.

“We want the volunteers already in place. There should be a priorly ordained, on-call group of doctors for the whole year, every day, in every PRC chapter, whether there is a disaster or none,” Gordon said.

Under the proposed system, PRC and PCS would maintain a roster of volunteer surgeons who can be activated through the PRC Operations Center when specialized medical expertise is needed.

“If you have priorly ordained volunteers, alam na kung sino ang tatawagan at kung sino ang tutugon. Hindi ‘yong kapag tinawagan, sasabihin, ‘Ay, ‘di ako pwede, may ginagawa ako,’” Gordon said.

He said this is particularly important when disasters such as earthquakes cause hospitals to collapse or fires to break out. Through its Operations Center, PRC can identify where medical support is needed and deploy volunteer doctors using its Volunteers Emergency Response Vehicles (VERVs).

“PRC can help deliver those volunteer doctors through our VERVs, which we can send everywhere and assist us, for example, in our Emergency Field Hospitals,” Gordon said.

PRC’s state-of-the-art Emergency Field Hospitals are equipped to provide surgical and emergency care in disaster areas.

But Gordon stressed that equipment alone cannot save lives without the people who know how to use it.

“Gaano pa man kahanda, kung wala kang tao, wala rin,” Gordon said.

The system reflects the PRC’s 4Ps — Predict, Plan, Prepare, and Practice — which requires planning long before a disaster occurs.

“You don’t plan on the disaster on the day itself. You plan long before it happens,” he said.

Guided by the PRC mantra, “Volunteers + Logistics + Information Technology = A Red Cross that is Always First, Always Ready, Always There,” the partnership brings together PCS’ volunteer surgeons and PRC’s logistics and information technology.

“We’re not doing this for show. We are doing this because there is a faster and more effective response,” Gordon said.

As PCS marks its 90th anniversary, Gordon said the two organizations should continue building on their 14-year partnership by putting systems in place before disaster strikes, ensuring that trained volunteers, medical expertise, equipment, and logistics are ready when lives are at stake.
