Ivan Anthony Henares, PhD is a tourism educator, cultural policy researcher, and advocate for heritage conservation in the Philippines. He is Secretary General of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, Commissioner of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Assistant Professor at the Asian Institute of Tourism of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. At present, he

is also Secretary General of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC), Head of the Subcommission on Cultural Heritage and National Committee on Monuments and Sites of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Chairperson of the Heritage Conservation Society (HCS), Philippine Committee President of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH Philippines), Board Member of the Southeast Asian Heritage Alliance (SEACHA) and, International Correspondent (Philippines) to the Asian Network for Industrial Heritage (ANIH). He was named one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in the field of Heritage Conservation in 2012, and an Asia 21 Young Leader in 2008. Dr. Henares received his PhD in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Graduate Certificate in Environmental Policy from Purdue University (2017-2018 Fulbright-CHED Scholar). He completed his elementary and secondary education at the Ateneo de Manila University, and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Master of Business Administration and Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning degrees all at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

With the implementation of the Preliminary Assessment (PA) requirement for World Heritage nominations in 2027, national government agencies and local stakeholders met last Thursday for the dossier preparation for the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape, the only site in the Tentative List that has undergone PA. Leading the meeting was DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, with DOST-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Director Teresito Bacolcol, National Museum of the Philippines Director General Jeremy Barns, UNESCO-Philippine National Commission Secretary-General Ivan Anthony Henares, DFA-UNIO Assistant Secretary Leila Lora-Santos, DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau National Parks Division Chief Ryan Cuanan, Batangas State University Vice President Albertson Amante, Batangas Tourism Officer Jaida Castillo, their respective agency personnel, as well as representatives from the DENR-National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, and the Protected Area Management Office of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape. The Technical Working Group created a Technical Working Committee that will lead the writing of the dossier.

The Sasmuan Wetlands Biosphere Reserve bid is moving forward! The UNESCO-Philippine National Commission met with Sasmuan, Pampanga Mayor Catalina Cabrera and the municipal government today. The Sasmuan Pampanga Coastal Wetlands is a Ramsar site or Wetland of International Importance.
