SPARK - Katipunan, with the entire Ateneo community, mourns the deaths of two students in Ateneo de Zamboanga. We are one in the call for urgent mental health support for all victims and families, and agree with the need for privacy as families' grieve and the issue develops.

We condemn the culture of violence that has created this shooting incident. Violence does not exist in isolation. The violence committed today reflects the violence that occurs everyday, the violence that the Filipino youth have always been exposed to.

The children of this country have seen how thousands were slain in their communities at the orders of President Duterte. We have seen how armed goons of landgrabbers, big businessmen, and politicians tear apart homes and workers' picketlines. We have seen how the police and military are used by politicians to cement their own power by the use of guns, to silence opposition with imprisonment or death.

For schools to truly be safe spaces, we must fight to create a society where structural violence is not the norm. We must fight for systemic change everyday, everywhere, until violence like this stops once and for all.

ATENEO, ‘WAG NA KAYO MAGHUGAS KAMAY! NEGLIGENT DIN KAYO!

SPARK - Katipunan vehemently condemns the statements Ateneo has made regarding Coach Tab Baldwin. Today, Ateneo has stated that Baldwin is allegedly a “consultant” and not a University “employee.”

We acknowledge that having coaches as consultants is regular practice in the Philippine sports industry. However, we question this distinction and its implications. For so long, why did Ateneo allow its student-athletes to embark on out-of-campus trips without proper safety protocols, all because Baldwin was not a University employee? Why did Ateneo entrust the safety of their students to someone who was not, allegedly, completely accountable to the University?

With reports from previous Ateneo men’s basketball players publicly detailing questionable methods of coaching—why did Ateneo never step in? This attempt to wash their hands of responsibility and pin the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili on Baldwin, reveals a worse reality: Ateneo was negligent. Ateneo failed to protect its students.

CIDG, HOLD ATENEO ACCOUNTABLE! DO NOT USE STUDENTS AND WORKERS AS SCAPEGOATS!

SPARK - Katipunan expresses alarm over CIDG Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s suggestion to file cases against student managers and ball boys over the deaths of late student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

We are one with the entire Ateneo community and the entire country’s call for truth, justice, and accountability. To genuinely achieve these three things, we assert that all eyes should be on those in power: Coach Tab Baldwin, other associate coaches, Ateneo University President Father Bobby Yap, and officials from the University Athletics Office.

We assert that student managers and ball boys do not have the same decision-making power as officials from these bodies do. Filing cases against these students and workers distracts us from the real issue at hand: the Ateneo administration and Men’s Basketball Team completely failed to care for its students.

Ateneo must be held accountable! We must be sharp and deliberate with our fact-finding for the truth!

Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan calls on the government to cut through the drama and deliver on its mandate.

The Philippine government has the ability and legal backing to enforce any violations international humanitarian law through Republic Act 9851. As such, law enforcement agencies are within the purview to implement the ICC warrant of arrest for Bato Dela Rosa in his role as co-perpetrator of the Duterte era war on drugs leading to the deaths of thousands of working class and young Filipinos.

Any claim made to the contrary is made in the political interest of protecting Bato dela Rosa and his pro-Duterte allies and dynasties. Likewise, the Senate majority led by Alan Peter Cayetano must not use the “traditions” and “privileges” of the Senate to aid and abet an international fugitive within its halls. The stand-off outside the Senate Complex is a slap in the face of the Filipino people who have continually sought justice for violations of its democratic rights and the public trust by the corrupt and power-hungry elite.

Furthermore, if the Senate wishes to restore any semblance of its legitimacy, it must immediately convene itself on the matter of Sara Duterte’s impeachment. It must not follow the example of the shenanigans and antics made by Chiz Escudero to delay and derail the much-needed prosecution of the crimes committed by the Vice President.

The youth will no longer see through the illusions of the ruling class in power. It is time for the Senate to get its act straight, or it will be the people themselves who will finish the job for them.
