Gospel: Mark 11:27-33

I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question

In the Gospel today, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to Jesus and asked Him who had given Him the authority to do the things he’s doing. Jesus replied, “I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question.”

Whenever we go to Jesus and ask Him questions, how ready are we to enter into a dialogue with Him? Do we invite Him to ask us questions so that our relationship and conversation can deepen? Or do our prayers remain one-sided, with only us speaking?

Holy Spirit, help us so we can enter into a deeper level of faith in God by allowing Him to speak to us more and more. Help us grow in love by becoming more attentive to God’s words in our hearts. Amen.

Gospel: Mark 11:11-26

Have faith in God

In the Gospel today, the disciples saw the fig tree that Jesus cursed had withered at the roots. Peter remembered and asked Jesus to look. Jesus then answered, “Have faith in God, truly I tell you if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.

In the same way, we are called not only to have faith in the power of God, but also in His identity. Whatever we ask for in prayer and believe we will receive, will be ours. Not because we deserve it or have worked hard for it, but because that is who our Father is.

Our Father in Heaven, holy be Your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Gospel: Mark 10:46-52

What do you want me to do for you?

In the Gospel today, a blind man, Bartimeus, began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”. Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more. Jesus then asked the disciples to call him. Jesus then asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”. Bartimeus replied, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

In times of hardship, how persistent are we in calling on Jesus? Do we continue to call on Him no matter how discouraging the world around us is? Are we ready to throw off our cloak, jump to our feet and go to Jesus as Bartimeus did when Jesus called him? And ultimately, when Jesus asks us, are we ready to say what we want Him to do for us?

Dearest Jesus, grant us the heart to call on You in the midst of our blindness. Help us find the courage to go to You and tell You how much we want to see with our hearts wide open. Amen.

Gospel: Mark 10:32-45

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve

In the Gospel today, Jesus took the disciples aside and told them what was going to happen to Him in Jerusalem. He later said that, unlike the Gentiles, they must not exercise authority over others. Instead, they must serve.

In our lives today, no matter our current reality, we are called by Jesus to serve. Who are the people you encounter daily? People that you encounter just once? You are invited today to see them all with the eyes of a servant. How can you serve them?

Dear Jesus, thank You for teaching us how to live and love in our daily lives. Thank You for teaching us that no matter where we are, we can bring You to the people we encounter by serving them. Amen.

Gospel: Mark 10:28-31

And in the world to come that person will have eternal life

In the Gospel today, Jesus assures Peter and the other disciples that anyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property for His sake and for the Good News will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and property – including persecution.

Today, we are reminded that there is something greater than the earthly things we experience and possess, for there is eternal life awaiting us, but only if we accept the invitation and all that it entails: giving up indifference for love; giving up selfishness for faith; giving up anger for hope; and giving up bitterness for joy. Jesus assures us that whatever we choose to let go of for his sake, he can replace it with something greater.

Dear Jesus, thank You for giving us so much more than we deserve. Thank You for your eternal grace and mercy that are You willing to give us eternal life. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church
Gospel: John 19:25-34

Here is your mother

In the Gospel reading today, when Jesus saw His mother standing near the cross with the disciple He loved, He said to her, “Woman, here is your son.” And He said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.

Today, Jesus looks at us with the same gaze as He did at the disciple – with knowledge in His heart of how much He loves us. In the same way that He entrusts us to His mother, He also asks us to let His Mother – our Mother Mary into our homes. How will you welcome her into your home today?

Dear Jesus, thank You for entrusting to us Your mother. Thank You for teaching us how to love her just like how you love all of us. Help us be humble enough to accept her love and presence not only in our homes but in our hearts too. Amen.

Gospel: John 20:19-23

They were filled with the Spirit

Do we know and experience the gift and power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? In today's Gospel reading, Jesus promised his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit, saying, "Receive the Holy Spirit!" He knew that they would need this power to fulfil the mission entrusted to them. Just as Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit when he was baptised in the River Jordan, so the disciples needed to be baptised and anointed by the Holy Spirit.

Likewise, Christ gives us the Holy Spirit to enable us to live a new way of life — one of love, peace, joy, and righteousness. The Holy Spirit gives us gifts so that our lives can bear much fruit. He fills our hearts with the love of God, giving us the strength and courage to live as faithful disciples. He instructs us in the ways of God, giving us wisdom and understanding.

The gift of Pentecost was made possible through the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. Let us invite Jesus, our Lord, to breathe the Holy Spirit upon us and anoint us with tongues of fire, so that we may boldly proclaim the Kingdom through the ministry of the Word and the testimony of our lives.

Happy and blessed Pentecost to everyone!

Gospel: John 21:20-25

What is that to you? Follow me!

Why do we often compare ourselves to others? Do we envy those who seem to be more fortunate than us? Peter asked Jesus about John's future, and Jesus' response is food for thought.

What happens in other people's lives is between them and the Lord. The missions of other people are the business of the Lord and those individuals. We must focus on our own lives, our own relationships with Jesus, and our own missions and purposes.

Peter was tasked with shepherding Christ's flock, ultimately giving his life in martyrdom for the gospel. John's role was to bear witness to the risen Lord and to testify to the gospel account of Jesus' identity as the divine Son of God, who came to save us from sin and death. John lived to a great age and wrote the gospel as his testimony.

Whatever plan or purpose Jesus has for us, it will be good and fruitful, provided that we are faithful and fulfil it to the best of our ability. Are we sharing the joy of the gospel message with others, telling them that Jesus died to bring us new life, freedom, love, and the power to live as disciples?

Gospel: John 21:15-19

Do you love me more than these?

Jesus asked Simon Peter, and he asks each of us, a very personal and profound question: 'Do you love me more than anything else that is dear to you?' Jesus shows us that love is both a personal choice and a gift that is freely given — it is the act of giving oneself to another person for their own sake.

This is the love that God has for us: unconditional, perfect and freely given. This love is the greatest possession we can have in life, and it is central to Jesus' question. When we acknowledge the extent of God's love for us and his concern for our future, can we value it above our earthly possessions and relationships? God's love frees us from fear and anxiety, compelling us to give him our all.

Peter must have been deeply pained when Jesus questioned him three times about his love for him. Having denied Jesus three times, Peter was now full of grief and deep remorse. He stated that he loved Jesus and was willing to serve him no matter the cost. Jesus then challenged Peter to abandon his work as a fisherman and take on the task of shepherding God's people.

Today, the Lord asks us, 'Do you love me more than anything else in life?' May we answer 'yes' to that question.

Gospel: John 17:20-26

May they all be one

In today's Gospel reading, Jesus offers a heartfelt prayer for unity during the Last Supper. This prayer is about the love and unity he wants for all his followers, not just his disciples, but everyone who believes in him, forever.

In today's world, there is so much war, division and enmity among people. Social media is full of negativity that highlights the worst aspects of humanity. However, Jesus calls on us today to unite in love, especially as members of his body, the Church. He points to the unity between himself and God the Father as an example for us to follow.

This unity is based on mutual love, service and honour, and oneness of mind, heart and spirit. Jesus invites us to become instruments of harmony, peace, and unity in order to proclaim the Kingdom and the glory of God. We should strive to build bridges among people, make God known and loved by all, and recognize our need for Jesus and the redemption of our sins.

Do our actions and words nurture love and acceptance towards others? Do we treat others as brothers and sisters in Christ? Lord Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, draw each one of us into the unity that you and the Father have, and into the unity that you desire for all who belong to you.
