Look: 22 July 2026 – The Philippine Coast Guard, through Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Pililla, together with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Rizal, conducted an actual area assessment and aerial survey in the vicinity waters of Pililla, Rizal, following reports of a fish kill incident that circulated on social media on 21 July 2026.

The joint operation aimed to assess the extent of the affected area and gather field information and support BFAR Rizal’s ongoing assessment. An unmanned aerial system (drone) was utilized to document the affected waters and identify possible environmental conditions associated with the incident.

Initial field observations indicated that possible contributing factors may include excessive algal growth and decomposition, elevated water temperature, and limited wind or water movement, all of which may reduce dissolved oxygen levels and adversely affect aquatic life. These observations are preliminary and remain subject to BFAR Rizal’s technical evaluation.

Interviews conducted with local fisherfolk revealed that dead fish were first observed floating in portions of the affected waters on 21 July 2026. The fisherfolk further reported that bighead and bangus comprised the majority of the affected fish observed in the area. They likewise noted changes in the appearance of the water and expressed concern over the impact of the incident on their livelihood. These accounts were documented and relayed to BFAR Rizal as supporting information for further assessment.

The incident was likewise reported to the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) for information, monitoring, and appropriate action within its mandate.

The Philippine Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation and remains committed to supporting partner agencies in protecting the marine environment and safeguarding the welfare of communities that depend on the resources of Laguna Lake.
