“97IB Earns Recognition for Good Governance and Professional Excellence”

Zamboanga del Sur – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion was honored with the Institutionalized Status Award and Command Plaque during the celebration of the 90th Founding Anniversary of the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, Philippine Army, held on May 22, 2026, at the Tabak Wellness Center, Kuta Major Cesar L. Sang-an, Upper Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

The Institutionalized Status Award was conferred upon the battalion for successfully meeting the standards of the Army Governance Pathway for good governance and organizational excellence.

The recognition reflects the unit’s commitment to sustaining effective systems, sound management practices, and good governance in the performance of its mandate.

Meanwhile, the Command Plaque was awarded in recognition of the battalion’s operational accomplishments, particularly its sustained efforts in maintaining the insurgency-free status of the Province of Zamboanga del Norte through intensified security operations and community support initiatives.

The unit was also recognized for its successful conduct of the Inter-Agency Territorial Defense Operation Exercise, which significantly contributed to the mission objectives of Joint Task Force ZAMPELAN and the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division.

The recognition highlights the continuing collaboration among the Armed Forces of the Philippines, local government units, partner agencies, and community stakeholders in advancing peace, security, and development in the region.

In a statement, Battalion Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Bergonia expressed his gratitude to all partner stakeholders and communities for their unwavering support and cooperation.

“This achievement is the result of collective dedication, teamwork, and the strong partnership between the military and the civilian sector. It also serves as an opportunity to strengthen camaraderie, unity, and cooperation among military units, stakeholders, and partner organizations in pursuit of lasting peace and sustainable development,” Lt. Col. Bergonia said.

This year’s 90th Founding Anniversary celebration of 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division carried the theme, “Siyamnapung Taon ng Tapang at Dangal,” underscoring the Philippine Army’s enduring commitment to service, honor, and nation-building.

STRENGTHENING AWARENESS ON MARITIME SOVEREIGNTY: 97IB Strengthens West Philippine Sea (WPS) Information Campaign in Zamboanga del Norte

‎ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion and the 1st Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Company, in partnership with Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU), conducted the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Information Campaign for students, faculty members, and staff of JRMSU campuses in Siocon and Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte on May 14 and 16, 2026, respectively.

‎The activity aimed to enhance awareness on the geographical, historical, and legal basis of the Philippines’ claim over the West Philippine Sea while promoting understanding on the importance of maritime sovereignty, national security, and the protection of marine resources. The activity was actively participated in by approximately 1,000 students, together with faculty members and staff of the aforesaid institution.

‎The information campaign serves as a platform to strengthen public understanding of issues affecting the country's territorial integrity and emphasizes the role of the youth in fostering patriotism and supporting nation-building efforts.

‎Furthermore, the activity reflects the continuing commitment of the 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion and its partners in promoting informed communities and strengthening awareness on matters concerning national security and sovereignty.

LEADERSHIP RENEWED: 97IB Conducts Joint Change of Command and Change of Chief of Office Ceremony

PIÑAN, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion, 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, Philippine Army conducted a Joint Change of Command Ceremony for Alpha Company and Delta Company and a Change of Chief of Office Ceremony for the Logistics Section at the Headquarters of 97IB, Barangay Del Pilar, Piñan, Zamboanga del Norte on May 14, 2026.

The ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant Colonel Jessie G. Bergonia, Commanding Officer of the 97th Infantry Battalion, highlighting the importance of leadership transition in maintaining organizational effectiveness and ensuring continuity of mission accomplishment.

During the Change of Command Ceremony for Alpha Company, First Lieutenant Jonathan Paul R. Booc formally relinquished his duties as Officer-in-Charge and transferred leadership to First Lieutenant Romulo B Dawilan III, the incoming Company Commander. Likewise, Captain Rufino M Deculin Jr. formally relinquished his duties as Company Commander of Delta Company and transferred command to Captain Willie Yexel N. Silga, the incoming Company Commander.

For the Change of Chief of Office Ceremony, Captain Monte Carlo A Valencia formally relinquished his duties as Logistics Officer to Captain Rufino M Deculin Jr., who assumed the responsibilities as the newly installed Logistics Officer of the Battalion.

The activity included the presentation of command plaques, signing of relinquishment and assumption orders, and the symbolic handover of office symbols signifying the transfer of authority and responsibility.

In his message, Lt Col Bergonia expressed his appreciation to the outgoing officers for their dedication and contributions to the Battalion and encouraged the newly installed leaders to uphold professionalism, integrity, and commitment in performing their duties and responsibilities."Leadership transition ensures continuity and strengthens the organization in carrying out its mission," Lt Col Bergonia emphasized.

The activity concluded with the Battalion's reaffirmation of its commitment to sustain operational effectiveness, strengthen unit cohesion, and ensure the continuous fulfillment of its mission through competent and dedicated leadership.

SUPPORT TO DEVELOPMENT: 97IB Ensures Security During Implementation of DSWD Community Projects in Zamboanga del Norte

ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion provided security assistance during the major livelihood, healthcare, and community development activities led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the municipalities of Sirawai and Sibuco on May 13, 2026.

The 97IB provided security coverage during the visit Secretary Rex Gatchalian, together with some DSWD officials, in Barangay Guban, Sirawai for the inspection of the community-driven development mega health center project aimed at improving healthcare access in geographically isolated communities. Likewise, the visit also highlighted the turnover checks for Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) projects benefiting 105 SLP associations with 2,779 beneficiaries across the municipality. The Municipal Mayor, Hon. Aljazar Janihim, together with Sirawai LGU warmly welcomed Secretary Gatchalian and his party.

In the afternoon, Sibuco Mayor Joel M Ventura and Brigadier General Samuel G. Yunque, Commander of 102nd Infantry (IGSOON) Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army, welcomed Secretary Gatchalian upon his arrival in the Municipality of Sibuco. The visit was in line with the implementation of the DSWD Peace and Development Buong Bansa Mapayapa (PDBBM) Program in Barangay Jatian, Sibuco, which included site inspection, beneficiary consultation, and the turnover of 75 Modified Shelter Assistance Project (MSAP) units for Indigenous families and previously conflict-affected residents.

The deployment of troops ensured the safe and orderly movement of government officials and beneficiaries, significantly contributing to the uninterrupted delivery of healthcare, livelihood, and community development programs in the province.

𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: 97IB Earns “Excellent” Rating During Division-Level Annual General Inspection 2026

PIÑAN, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Jessie G. Bergonia, earned an overall rating of 98.3%, with an adjectival rating of “Excellent,” during the Division-Level Annual General Inspection conducted on 11–12 May 2026 at the Headquarters 97IB, Barangay Del Pilar, Piñan, Zamboanga del Norte.

The inspection was conducted by the Office of the Division Inspector General, 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, Philippine Army, headed by Colonel Franco Raphael H. Alano MNSA (INF) PA. The evaluation covered the battalion’s leadership and management, morale and welfare, discipline, law and order, administrative management, operational preparedness, logistics, and financial management in compliance with Philippine Army standards and policies.

The rating reflects the dedication, discipline, and commitment of every Kalasaglahi Trooper in upholding the highest standards of organizational effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Bergonia expressed his gratitude to the inspection team and commended the Battalion’s officers and enlisted personnel for their collective efforts and unwavering commitment in achieving the remarkable result.

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work, discipline, teamwork, and dedication of Kalasaglahi Troopers. The inspection not only validated our compliance with Army standards but also served as an opportunity for continuous learning and improvement.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Division Inspector General and the entire inspection team for their guidance and valuable recommendations. Rest assured that 97IB strives for operational efficiency and organizational effectiveness as the Battalion continues to carry out its mission and serve with purpose and excellence,” Lt. Col. Bergonia said.

This milestone further highlights the battalion’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, and mission accomplishment in support of peace, security, and development efforts in Zamboanga del Norte.

IN PHOTOS I The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion through the efforts of Bravo Company led by its Commanding Officer, 1st Lieutenant Henry Labasan, in coordination with Hon. Jelster Ed T. Quimbo, Mayor of Labason, and Police Lt. Col. Edwin D. Verzon, Force Cmdr, ZDN 2nd PMFC, successfully facilitated the voluntary surrender of loose fi****ms, explosive, and ammunition by former members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) on May 7, 2026 in Labason, ZDN.

In the afternoon of the same day, the surrendered loose fi****ms and other war materiel such as one (1) US Carbine M3 rifle with one (1) magazine and twelve (12) rounds of ammunition, one (1) improvised shotgun with three (3) rounds of ammunition, and one (1) hand gr***de, were presented to the Vice Governor, Hon. Julius C. Napigquit, who ably represented Governor Darel Dexter T. Uy, at the Provincial Capitol Building in Dipolog City. The ceremonial turnover of loose fi****ms was also witnessed and participated by Lieutenant Colonel Jessie Bergonia, Commanding Officer of 97IB; Police Colonel Reydante Ariza, Provincial Director of ZDN PPO; Police Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Verson, Force Commander of 2nd PMFC; Hon. Jelster Ed Quimbo, Municipal Mayor of Labason; and Acting PSWD Officer Ms. Hannah Lou Mandantes.

The successful surrender of loose fi****ms was the result of continued efforts to implement the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program in support of the government’s peace and security initiatives and their commitment to sustaining lasting peace and stability in the province.

97IB Marks Milestone: Promotions, New Leadership and Tribute to Retiring Soldiers

Piñan, Zamboanga del Norte – The 97th Infantry (KALASAGLAHI) Battalion conducted a Donning of Ranks, Pinning of Patches, and Retirement Ceremony during the Flag Retreat at its headquarters on May 1, 2026.

The activity was led by Major Jullieto Pollescas, Executive Officer, in behalf of Lieutenant Colonel Jessie G. Bergonia, Commanding Officer of 97IB.

A total of nine (9) enlisted personnel and one (1) officer were promoted during the ceremony, highlighted by the promotion of First Lieutenant Jobelle Arabaca to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. The event recognized their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to service.

The battalion also formally welcomed Captain Willie Yexel N. Silga through the pinning of unit patch, symbolizing his inclusion into the KALASAGLAHI family and his role in advancing the unit’s mission.

In the same ceremony, the unit paid tribute to the distinguished service of Staff Sergeant Windel Rey M. Ceño and Staff Sergeant Ramel A. Patalinghug, who were honored upon their retirement from active military service. Their invaluable contributions and years of dedicated service were recognized by the battalion.

In his message, Major Pollescas congratulated the promotees, welcomed the newly assigned officer, and expressed gratitude to the retirees for their faithful service, emphasizing the importance of commitment, integrity, and excellence in upholding the mandate of the unit.

“I commend our promotees for their dedication—may you continue to lead with integrity and excellence. To Captain Willie Yexel N. Silga, welcome to the KalasagLahi family.
