𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐣𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚

𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐚, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 – For the Cocjin family, Cocjin Shawarma is more than a small food business because it is a way of keeping a loved one’s dream alive.

The business, located in Poblacion, Norala, started in 2024 from the dream of the late James Earl “JimBOY” Cocjin to serve affordable and quality shawarma to the community.

After James Earl passed away, his family decided to continue the business in his memory. His mother, Janesse Cocjin, took on the responsibility of managing the business and continued working toward the dream they had started together.

Like many small businesses, Cocjin Shawarma faced many challenges during its first year of operation. The family had to deal with the loss of their loved one while also managing rising prices of raw materials and increasing competition.

In 2025, another challenge came when strong winds damaged their shawarma cart and affected their daily operations.

While recovering from the damage, the Local Government Unit of Norala informed the family about the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (PPG) Program and encouraged them to apply.

The family visited Negosyo Center Norala, where they received guidance on the application process and the documents they needed to prepare. After completing the requirements, they submitted their application and waited for the result.

Their application was approved, and they received a livelihood package through the DTI PPG Program that helped them continue their business. The assistance allowed them to increase their inventory and improve their daily operations.

From earning about ₱3,000, the business now earns around ₱10,000, with sales increasing by more than 200%.

DTI also gave the business opportunities to join activities where the owners met other MSMEs, suppliers, and business partners.

Today, Cocjin Shawarma has expanded to two branches with two distributors and continues to serve customers in Norala and nearby areas. The family plans to continue growing the business, create more jobs, and reach more communities.

Janesse Cocjin encourages other entrepreneurs to seek help from government agencies and take advantage of the programs available to MSMEs. She believes that learning new skills, working hard, and staying committed can help a small business grow.

For the Cocjin family, every shawarma they serve is a reminder of JimBOY’s dream and the journey they continue together.

Their story shows how determination, family support, and assistance from DTI helped turn a difficult time into an opportunity to build a stronger business.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧

𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐧, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 - For many entrepreneurs, the COVID-19 pandemic brought uncertainty and hardship. For Melvin M. Casimero, however, it also became the beginning of a journey fueled by resilience, determination, and hope.

In January 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Casimero established Coolits Cake Shop in Barangay Lampitak, Tampakan, South Cotabato. What started as a small online cake-selling business was inspired by his wife’s passion and talent for baking. Together, they transformed their love for creating cakes into a source of income that helped support their family while bringing affordable and delicious cakes to their community.

As customer demand steadily increased, so did the challenges of sustaining the business. Limited capital and inadequate equipment made it difficult to expand production and compete with larger establishments. Financial constraints also prevented the business from investing in better facilities and maintaining stable operations.

Despite these obstacles, Casimero remained committed to keeping the business alive.

A significant breakthrough came on April 25, 2025, when he attended the Food and Beverage Industry Development: Empowering Food Service Owners and Processors for Growth seminar conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Negosyo Center Tampakan. During the activity, he learned about the Rise Up! Micro Multi-Purpose Loan Program of the Small Business Corporation (SB Corp.), a financing initiative designed to provide accessible capital to micro and small enterprises.

With the guidance and assistance of the Negosyo Center Business Counselor, Casimero successfully submitted his online loan application in September 2025. Three months later, in December 2025, his application was approved, granting him a ₱100,000 loan that would become the turning point for Coolits Cake Shop.

The financial assistance enabled the business to invest in essential equipment and operational improvements. Casimero purchased a freezer to increase production capacity, secured additional working capital to sustain daily operations, and acquired a motorcycle to improve delivery services and customer convenience.

More importantly, the loan allowed the business to relocate and reopen its physical store in a more strategic and accessible location—a milestone that had once seemed out of reach. The results were immediate and significant.

With improved facilities, expanded production capacity, and enhanced delivery services, Coolits Cake Shop experienced increased sales and strengthened its presence in the local market.

The reopening of the physical store also created new employment opportunities, allowing the business to hire one regular employee and one on-call worker, contributing to the local economy while serving more customers.

Today, Coolits Cake Shop continues to delight customers with quality cakes while steadily growing its loyal customer base throughout Tampakan.

Looking back on the challenges they have overcome, Mr. Casimero believes that perseverance and adaptability are essential qualities for every entrepreneur.

“Huwag lang mapaghinaan ng loob, patuloy-tuloy lang sa paghahanapbuhay. Malaking tulong din ang paggamit ng social media sa negosyo.”

Recognizing the power of digital marketing, he also shared that partnering with local social media influencers in Tampakan significantly increased the visibility of Coolits Cake Shop, helping attract new customers and expand market reach.

Beyond the financial assistance, Casimero expressed his sincere appreciation to the Department of Trade and Industry, Negosyo Center Tampakan, and the Small Business Corporation for providing opportunities that allowed their business to recover and grow.

“Salamat kaayo tungod sa loan, nagbag-o ang among negosyo. Kung hindi ko nalaman sa DTI ang business loan offer ng SB Corp., siguro hindi na namin muling mabubuksan ang negosyo namin.”

The story of Coolits Cake Shop demonstrates how timely access to financing, combined with entrepreneurial determination and government support, can transform a struggling enterprise into a growing and sustainable business.

From a modest online cake-selling venture born during one of the country’s most challenging periods to a reopened and thriving physical shop, Coolits Cake Shop stands as an inspiring example of resilience in action. It proves that with the right opportunities, continuous innovation, and unwavering perseverance, Filipino micro, small, and medium enterprises can not only recover from adversity but also build a stronger future for their businesses, their employees, and their communities.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞

𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 - Sometimes, the biggest opportunities begin with the simplest request.

For Shaira Sharmaine D. Valdez, owner of Mama Shai Handicrafts, what started as a favor for a co-worker in 2021 became the foundation of a thriving creative enterprise.

At the time, Shaira had never made a calligraphy backdrop using styrofoam. Despite having no prior experience, she accepted the challenge with determination and curiosity. Using donated materials and offering her labor free of charge, she completed the project successfully. The finished product not only impressed her client but also revealed an untapped opportunity in the local market.

Recognizing the growing demand for affordable, personalized event essentials, Shaira established Mama Shai Handicrafts, a business built on creativity, craftsmanship, and heartfelt service.

True to its slogan, “We Make Your Memories More Memorable,” Mama Shai Handicrafts specializes in transforming life’s special occasions into lasting keepsakes. What initially focused on handcrafted calligraphy backdrops has since evolved into a one-stop creative shop offering customized souvenirs, invitations, printed materials, handcrafted décor, crocheted items, laser-engraved products, and innovative 3D-printed creations.

Every product reflects Shaira’s commitment to creating meaningful pieces that celebrate life’s milestones.

Like many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Mama Shai Handicrafts encountered challenges while expanding its operations. Keeping pace with changing customer preferences, sourcing quality materials, and managing fluctuating demand required continuous adaptation and innovation.

Determined to improve her products and services, Shaira invested in modern equipment, including an A3 printer, a laser engraver, and a 3D printer. More importantly, she sought guidance to strengthen her entrepreneurial capabilities.

Her breakthrough came in June 2025 when she joined the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Youth Entrepreneurship Program – BOOTCAMP for Young Entrepreneurs (YEP-BYCE). The program introduced her to mentorship opportunities, business networks, and practical entrepreneurial skills that would soon reshape her business.

Building on this experience, Shaira enrolled in the Kapatid Mentor ME–Money and Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Program, where she gained deeper knowledge in business management, strategic planning, marketing, and financial sustainability.

Her dedication and willingness to learn quickly gained recognition. She was selected as one of the 14 business pitchers during the Regional Business Pitching for Youth Entrepreneurs and later received the prestigious Creative Maverick Award during the 2026 KMME-MME Program—an acknowledgment of her innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial excellence.

The impact of these interventions has been remarkable.

Since participating in DTI’s programs, Mama Shai Handicrafts has recorded a 100 percent increase in sales compared to its early years of operation. Beyond financial growth, Shaira credits DTI for equipping her with the confidence, business mindset, and strategic direction needed to continuously innovate and remain competitive.

“The DTI didn’t just help me grow my sales; they gave me the knowledge, confidence, and the right mindset to innovate,” Shaira shares. “The connections I’ve made with fellow entrepreneurs and mentors have been invaluable, turning what was once a small operation into a recognized brand.”

Today, Mama Shai Handicrafts continues to expand its reach. Its products are available at Crafter’s Den Koronadal and the Koronadal Pasalubong Center, while regular participation in DTI-organized trade fairs and local exhibits has enabled the business to reach more customers and strengthen its presence in the community.

Despite her achievements, Shaira remains grounded and committed to continuous improvement. She continues to explore new technologies, develop innovative product lines, and create personalized handcrafted pieces that bring joy to every celebration.

Looking back on her journey, Shaira encourages aspiring entrepreneurs and fellow MSMEs to embrace every opportunity for growth.

“Don’t be afraid to try and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the DTI.”

Her story demonstrates that success does not always begin with abundant resources or years of experience. Sometimes, it begins with the courage to accept a challenge, the willingness to learn, and the determination to transform a simple idea into something extraordinary.

From creating her very first styrofoam backdrop to building a recognized creative brand, Shaira Sharmaine D. Valdez has proven that with passion, perseverance, and the right support system, humble beginnings can lead to remarkable success.

Today, Mama Shai Handicrafts stands not only as a business but also as an inspiring example of how creativity, innovation, and government support can empower Filipino entrepreneurs to turn dreams into lasting legacies.

𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐦𝐬𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

𝐓𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 – From a simple dream of decorating the Gonu B**g (Big House) with traditional crafts, the Lemsnolon Native Handicraft Makers Association has grown into a thriving community enterprise that showcases the beauty of Tboli artistry to the world.

Established on March 5, 2016, the association began with 22 members—many of them widows and solo parents—who sought to provide for their families while preserving their rich cultural heritage. What started as a small initiative soon became a symbol of resilience, unity, and empowerment for the women of Lemsnolon Cultural Village in Tboli, South Cotabato.

Their breakthrough came in 2017 when the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recognized the potential of their handmade crafts, including bracelets, earrings, Tboli blouses, and malongs. Through DTI’s continuous support, the association received training in Management, Marketing, Price Costing, and Bookkeeping, equipping its members with the knowledge and confidence to strengthen their operations.

In 2018, the association received five sewing machines through the Shared Service Facilities (SSF) program. This intervention transformed their production process from manual hand-stitching into a faster and more efficient operation, enabling them to meet increasing market demand while improving product quality.

Determined to grow further, the association secured registration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and became PhilGEPS-registered, opening opportunities for larger projects and government procurement.

Their dedication and craftsmanship gained international attention during the pandemic when a Miss Universe candidate and her mother commissioned hand-embroidered hood jackets from the association. This milestone introduced their products to global markets and elevated the visibility of Tboli craftsmanship worldwide.

The association also received support from various partners who believed in their mission. The “Magnegosyo Ta Day” program of the Office of the Vice President, through the OVP Satellite Office Mindanao, provided ₱150,000 in assistance, while the Tourism Promotions Board donated weaving materials worth ₱260,000. Additional support included ₱20,000 in cash assistance from the Rotary Club of Manila San Miguel, trainings and seminars from the Department of Tourism Region 12, and meals counterpart during trainings from the Local Government Unit of Tboli.

The group also achieved major recognition during the Treasures of Region 12 Trade Expo in Metro Manila, where they won both the Best Dressed Booth and Product Innovation awards. These achievements connected them to buyers from Cebu, Manila, and even abroad, significantly increasing their sales and expanding their market reach. Today, the association proudly operates its own Pasalubong Center at the New Public Terminal in Tboli, South Cotabato.

Now composed of 27 active members, the association continues to participate in local and national festivals such as the Tnalak Festival and Seslong Festival, promoting Tboli culture while creating sustainable livelihoods for their families.

Behind this inspiring success story is Tessie Sabal Arca, the association’s current President and a solo parent whose perseverance became a guiding light for the group. Through hard work and faith, she was able to support her children in completing their studies—one becoming a Registered Social Worker and another a Midwife.

For Arca, the journey was never easy, but giving up was never an option. She continues to inspire other groups and associations to remain strong despite challenges, emphasizing that perseverance, faith, and unity can turn dreams into reality.

Today, the Lemsnolon Native Handicraft Makers Association stands as a shining example of how culture, determination, and community support can transform lives—one stitch at a time.
