How A Single Drop for Safe Water Came to Be

The Philippines is a middle income country and there are no widespread chronic water shortages. However many of its residents do not have access to WaSH services. Deficiencies in support for WaSH and poor access are seen both as manifestations of poverty and as factors that worsen it. WaSH can also be a factor in conflict. A Single Drop for Safe Water (ASDSW) has identified key issues that it addresses within its programs: 1) The governance of WaSH services is fragmented throughout the government system, particularly at the local level and; 2) Community demand for improved WaSH services is often ineffective. These two (2) issues create a relationship where limited demand from the community reinforces limited response and accountability from government. Limited demand for service delivery reduces the need for technical and financial resources, limited resources results in low WaSH service delivery, hence the community does not see the impact of good WaSH service delivery and hence does not demand improvements. In addition to this the Philippines is one of the more disaster prone countries, which puts further pressure on government WaSH service delivery. It used its founders’, governing Board’s and staff’s years of experience and a culture of innovation to evolve its programmatic approach to address these issues: 1) Demand and capacity creation within poor and conflict-affected communities, making WaSH a peace and development effort; 2) Creation of structures and development planning capacity to create direction, structure and accountability within local governments and communities; 3) Developing technical capacity and governance capacity to plan, mobilize resources, implement and manage/maintain this WaSH service capacity in a manner that is resilient to disruptions; 4) Implementation of humanitarian response for WaSH in such a way as to increase the capacity of those affected and to springboard into long-term development.

Another sustainable sanitation facility inaugurated in vulnerable community in the city of Manila.

On June 16, 2026, no less than the vice mayor herself, vm chie atienza and councilor Irma Juson who chairs the committee on health of the council attended the turn over of the 4-door communal WaSH facility in bgy. 128 in the city of Manila. This is the second of sustainable sanitation models, constructed in the city, operated and managed by trained community members. It's sustainability relies on a minimal user's fee that provides fund for its operation and maintenance costs. The. Facility is envisioned to benefit 150 informal settler families and other users from the nearby multipurpose gym.

This is the second such sustainable sanitation model implemented by A Single Drop for Safe Water, funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with the Manila LGU through the Manila Health Department.

The festive affair was also attended by representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the DOH, the Manila Barangay Bureau and the Manila Health department.

😭💚 HARDWORK PAYS OFF!
BARANGAY STA. CRUZ – THE LAST ZOD BARANGAY, BUT ONE OF THE STRONGEST!

The Municipal Health Officer proudly congratulates Barangay Sta. Cruz for being the last and final barangay declared as ZOD today November 26, 2025 , completing the 9/9 target of Tubajon Municipality. Ulahi sa listahan, pero wala gyud ni atras—wala ni surrender. Instead, they finished with strength, unity, and heart.

Sa liderato ni Kapitan Genghiz Khan Vargas , kauban si Kagawad on Health KL Kate (Kath Luib) ug ang barangay officials, gipakita ang tinuod nga teamwork, pagtinabangay. Ilang suporta naghatag og kusog sa tanan nga ni sakripisyo para sa barangay.

The Municipal Health Office also expresses deep gratitude to SINGLE DROP (UNICEF) — ang NGO nga naghatag og suporta ug materyales nga dako kaayo og tabang sa pag-abot sa kalampusan karon. Their contribution showed that help can come from many places, and united efforts truly create change.

Dili mabayran ang kahago og sakripisyo sa atoang mga Barangay Health Workers headed by NDP Ma’am Marigold Besario . Bisan kapoy, bisan ulan ug init, wala gyud mo undang. Daghang hagit pero wala mo biya. Your dedication kept the vision alive and turned the goal into reality.

During the clean-up drive, klaro kaayo ang bayanihan spirit sa inying barangay . Mga 4Ps members, teachers and learners sa Sta. Cruz Elementary School, our SB on Health Evangeline Estoque Ladaga ug ang mga lumulupyo sa barangay—ni-tabang dili tungod gisugo, pero para sa kaayohan sa tanan . Mao ni ang klase sa kooperasyon nga dili masukod sa papel, pero makita sa kasingkasing.

We also give high recognition to RSI, Ma’am Jessica Paz Tidalgo whose guidance and effort helped lead Barangay Sta. Cruz toward this success. Her determination became an inspiration to many, and her leadership brought hope and direction in crucial moments.

This victory is ours, but this is only the beginning. 💚
