The National Capital Region Association of Persons with Disability Affairs Officers, Inc. (NCRAPDAOI) strongly condemns the use of disability as a punchline in podcast content. We do not tolerate the use of disability, or the lived experiences of Persons with Disabilities, as a means of ridicule, entertainment, or public amusement at the expense of their dignity.
Disability is not a joke. Behind every disability is a person whose dignity, rights, and humanity deserve respect. Turning disability into a punchline, even under the guise of comedy or casual conversation, risks perpetuating harmful stereotypes, normalizing discrimination, and reinforcing the barriers that persons with disabilities continue to face in society. When disability is used to generate laughter at the expense of persons with disabilities, it reinforces exclusion rather than promotes understanding.
As an association representing Persons with Disability Affairs Officers across the National Capital Region, NCRAPDAOI stands firm in its commitment to protecting the dignity, rights, and equal participation of persons with disabilities. We call on podcast creators, hosts, producers, media practitioners, and all content creators to exercise responsibility on their platforms and recognize the influence their words have in shaping public attitudes.
Persons with Disabilities are not props for comedy, nor should their conditions be reduced to punchlines for the entertainment of others. They deserve representation that recognizes their humanity, respects their experiences, and upholds their rights.
NCRAPDAOI stands in solidarity with the disability community in rejecting ableism in all its forms. We will continue to challenge ableist attitudes, call out harmful narratives, and advocate for a society where the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities are upheld in policies, institutions, public discourse, and everyday interactions.
