WHEN THE GROUND SHAKES, THE PNP STANDS FIRM — FIRST ON THE GROUND, LAST TO LEAVE, ALWAYS FOR THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

As search, rescue, relief, and recovery operations continue across earthquake-affected areas in Mindanao, stories of courage and selfless service from police officers on the ground have begun to emerge—stories that reflect the commitment of the men and women of the Philippine National Police to stand with communities during their most difficult moments.

Among them is Police Staff Sergeant Aldrin Bareo of the Glan Municipal Police Station in Sarangani Province, whose experience has become a powerful reminder of the sacrifices many police personnel make in times of crisis.

When the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on June 8, PSSg Bareo was carrying out his duties while his wife and young child were at home. As power and communication lines went down and panic spread across affected communities, he was unable to immediately contact his family or determine their condition. Despite the uncertainty, he remained with fellow responders, helping evacuate residents and ensuring the safety of children and families seeking shelter.

It would take nearly a day before he could confirm that his loved ones were safe and learn that their home had been destroyed by the earthquake.

His story is one among many unfolding across Regions 9, 11, 12, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, where police officers have remained on the frontlines of disaster response while facing their own personal challenges brought about by the calamity.

Since the earthquake struck, thousands of police personnel have been deployed to assist in search and rescue operations, evacuation efforts, traffic management, security operations, relief distribution, and coordination with local government units and disaster response agencies. Many have worked extended hours amid aftershocks, damaged infrastructure, and difficult conditions to help ensure the safety of affected residents.

As communities continue to recover, the PNP has also intensified its support for the establishment and security of temporary tent cities for families displaced by the earthquake. Police personnel are assisting local government units and partner agencies in identifying safe areas, maintaining order, and ensuring security, while helping guarantee that displaced residents have access to immediate assistance as authorities conduct structural assessments of damaged homes and buildings.
These continuing efforts reflect the PNP's commitment to responsive and effective public service during emergencies, consistent with its thrust of enhancing police operations and strengthening disaster response capabilities in times of crisis.

The ongoing operations are likewise aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure that government assistance reaches affected communities and that the safety and welfare of disaster victims remain a priority throughout the recovery process.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., said the dedication shown by police personnel in affected areas demonstrates the true spirit of public service.

"In times of disaster, our police officers do more than enforce the law. They become rescuers, protectors, coordinators, and sources of reassurance for communities facing uncertainty. We recognize the sacrifices being made by our personnel on the ground, many of whom are also affected by this tragedy, yet continue to serve with dedication and compassion," said PGen Nartatez.

The Chief PNP emphasized that the organization remains fully committed to supporting all government efforts aimed at helping affected families recover and rebuild.

"Habang patuloy ang pagbangon ng ating mga kababayan, mananatiling katuwang nila ang kanilang kapulisan. We will continue working closely with local governments, disaster response agencies, and community leaders to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most and that our communities remain safe throughout the recovery process," he added.

While the earthquake left behind damaged homes, disrupted livelihoods, and difficult challenges for many communities, it also revealed countless acts of dedication from responders who chose service above self. From conducting rescues and assisting evacuees to securing temporary shelters and supporting tent cities, police officers across Mindanao continue to demonstrate that public service extends far beyond the badge.

As recovery efforts move forward, the Philippine National Police remains steadfast in its mission to protect, assist, and serve, embodying the vision of a Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman.

Tomorrow, June 12, the nation will mark the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, and the Philippine National Police has assured full operational readiness to secure all related activities nationwide, particularly in major convergence areas and historical sites.

In preparation for the national celebration, the PNP has placed all units under Full Alert Status effective 5:00 PM of June 11 until 11:59 PM of June 12, 2026. This ensures continuous deployment readiness, quick response capability, and sustained security coverage throughout the Independence Day observance.

A total of 89,473 personnel have been deployed nationwide, composed of 77,020 PNP personnel, 1,975 personnel from other units, and 10,478 force multipliers. Of this number, around 16,000 personnel are deployed in the National Capital Region (NCR) alone, strategically covering key convergence points and critical installations.

These personnel are strategically assigned to key locations including Rizal Park (Luneta), historic monuments, government facilities, transport terminals, major thoroughfares, and identified public gathering areas where large crowds are expected.

Security deployments also include augmentation at key venues, route security for official movements, and dedicated contingents at critical installations and other major government sites. Border control checkpoints and chokepoints have likewise been intensified to support law enforcement visibility and deterrence measures.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. emphasized that the police force remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and orderly celebration for all Filipinos.

“We are fully prepared to secure this important national occasion. Our personnel are on the ground, alert, and ready to respond at any time. Tiyakin po natin na ang selebrasyon ng ating kalayaan ay magiging mapayapa at ligtas para sa lahat,” he said.

He further noted that coordination with local government units, partner agencies, and force multipliers is continuously strengthened to ensure seamless security operations across all regions.

This heightened security posture is in line with the PNP Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, reinforcing coordinated deployment, proactive policing, and rapid response systems during large-scale national events under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

As the country honors its hard-won freedom, the PNP reaffirms its commitment to public safety and service, embodying the principle of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman,” standing firm so Filipinos may celebrate Independence Day with confidence and peace of mind.

Pahayag ni PNP Chief PGEN Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr.: “Education opens doors for a better future. Patuloy na palalakasin ng PNP ang mga inisyatibong pang-edukasyon upang sa munting paraan ay matulungan ang mga bata na maabot ang kanilang mga pangarap."

“Even simple acts of kindness can bring hope to families in need.
