UPD ICE and MSU-IIT conclude NCTS Internship with Culminating Presentation

Congratulations to the students from the UPD Institute of Civil Engineering (UPD ICE) and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) for completing their internship at the UP National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS)!

The culminating activity was held on July 24, 2026, at NCTS Room A, marking the end of their 5-week internship from June 18-July 24, 2026, during which they completed 200 hours (UPD ICE) and 240 hours (MSU-IIT) of hands-on training. The interns were assigned to the four NCTS groups namely: Inclusive Transportation Group, Traffic Engineering and Management Group, Training Group and Transportation Environment and Energy Group, where they engaged in research and technical support activities.

UP NCTS at WCTR 2026

UP NCTS Research Extension and Professional Staff (REPS) and Research and Extension Fellow presented three studies at the 17th World Conference on Transport Research in Toulouse, France:

📌 “Did Tactical Urbanism Improve Pedestrian Safety? A Mixed-Methods Evaluation of Maginhawa Street, Quezon City, Philippines”

📌 “Pedestrian Activity and Perceptions in Tactical Urbanism: Comparative Evidence from Two Philippine Corridors”

📌 “Determinants of Passenger Satisfaction Among Elderly and Persons with Disabilities in Fare-Free Bus Service”

Their participation highlighted Philippine research on pedestrian safety, tactical urbanism, and inclusive public transportation while opening opportunities for international knowledge exchange and collaboration.

UP NCTS supports the observance of the NDRW

Inclusive transportation is one of the advocacies of the UP National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS). It supports the National Disability Rights Week (NDRW) which is observed annually from July 17 to 23 in the Philippines. It was established to highlight the rights, dignity, and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and to encourage public participation in improving their social and economic conditions (Proclamation No. 597, s. 2024). NDRW is crucial for promoting awareness, protecting the rights, and advancing the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.

The National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS), through its Inclusive Transportation (InTra) Group, successfully conducted a webinar on Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) on June 23, 2026.

The event served as a collaborative platform, bringing together key stakeholders from academia, government, industry, and the public.

Together, participants explored the emerging role of LEVs and their potential to shape a more inclusive and sustainable transport landscape in the Philippines.

UP NCTS Strengthens Local Capacity for Traffic Impact Assessment Evaluation

The UP National Center for Transportation Studies successfully conducted the Traffic Impact Assessment for Technical Evaluators Training Program from 29 June to 3 July 2026.

The five-day training aimed to enhance the capacity of technical evaluators in reviewing and assessing Traffic Impact Assessment studies for proposed developments. The program emphasized the role of TIA as a planning and evaluation tool that supports safer, more efficient, and more livable communities.

Participants came from various local government units, national agencies, academic institutions, and private organizations, including representatives from Taguig, Victorias, Quezon City, Manila, Oroquieta, General Mariano Alvarez, General Trias, Davao, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, MMDA, Metropolitan BLISTT Development Authority, DOTr, Mapúa University, F.F. Cruz and Co., Inc., Blackgear Environmental Engineering Services, and BT Arquitektos.

Participants were also provided with the LOCALsim software, as well as sample TIA evaluation materials to support their technical review work.

UP NCTS extends its appreciation to the resource persons, facilitators, training team, Quezon City Government, General Elmo San Diego, TTMD Head Dexter Cardenas, and the UP Institute of Civil Engineering interns for their support in the successful conduct of the program.

NCTS welcomes student interns from UPD ICE & MSU-IIT

The National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS) is pleased to welcome nineteen (19) college students from the University of the Philippines Diliman Institute of Civil Engineering (UPD ICE) and two (2) college students from the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) to undergo an internship.

These Civil Engineering students will be with us until July 31, gaining hands-on and practical experience in conducting research, creating knowledge products, and exploring diverse career paths in the engineering field.

We look forward to the interns’ continued development in competencies, work ethics, and values, which are essential for their future professional success.

Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) in the Philippines: Types and Related Infrastructure, Policies and Operations

Many Filipinos have embraced light electric vehicles as they are affordable, practical, and adaptable to the country's urban landscape. LEVS are becoming a part of the transportation landscapes are more commuters, like parents, small business owners, utilize them as an efficient and cost-effective way to traverse congested city streets and rural areas. Efforts are being made to reduce emissions and operating costs through electrification. The establishment of 'green cities' is expected to increase demand for e-vehicles in public transportation.

To address some issues on e-vehicles particularly the 2-3 wheeled e-vehicles, a webinar entitled “Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) in the Philippines: Types and related Infrastructure, Policies and Operations”, will be conducted on June 23, 2026, Tuesday, at 1:30-4:00 p.m. The webinar aims to: educate on different categories of 2-3 wheeled e-vehicles; enlighten the public about the various laws and regulations relating to 2-3 wheeled e-vehicles; cite actual incidents of danger/risk of 2-3 wheeled e-vehicles and how they were handled; and provide safety tips when operating 2-3 wheeled e-vehicles for a safer environment for everyone.
