A total of 70 individuals, civic organizations, government agencies and private companies donated P446,000 worth of cash and in-kind contributions in support of Brigada Eskwela 2026 during the campaign’s kickoff in Calapan City, June 1.

The donations, received before and during the nationwide launch of Brigada Eskwela, benefited Vicente and Astronica G***r Samala National High School in Barangay Baruyan, the host school for this year’s citywide opening program.

The ceremonial acceptance of contributions was among the highlights of the event, with stakeholders turning over school supplies, educational materials, furniture, equipment, construction materials and commitments for future assistance to help improve school facilities and address learners’ needs.

Among the major donors, the Rotary Club of Calapan provided construction materials and various school furniture and equipment valued at P70,000, while the Rotary Club of West Naujan donated a brand-new television unit.

City Savings Bank and China Bank contributed paint and construction materials, while Calapan Water supported the school through the installation of a free water station. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also turned over instructional and cleaning materials.

Several private individuals donated bags, school supplies and uniforms for students. Meanwhile, Pacific Intercontinental College pledged P40,000 for its “Adopt-a-Child” program.

Education officials said the outpouring of support signaled the spirit of “bayanihan” and demonstrated how partnerships among schools, communities and stakeholders help create a more conducive learning environment for learners.

The event gathered teachers, parents, volunteers, government officials and community partners as part of preparations for the opening of School Year 2026–2027 in the newly established secondary school.

Another highlight of the program was the groundbreaking ceremony for future infrastructure projects within the school campus.

Simultaneous Brigada Eskwela activities also commenced in public elementary and secondary schools across Calapan City and will continue until June 5.

This year’s Brigada Eskwela activities likewise extended to the Alternative Learning System (ALS), whose personnel and volunteers conducted clean-up and maintenance activities in Community Learning Centers (CLCs) throughout the city.

Meanwhile, Schools Division Superintendent Susana M. Bautista said the annual campaign seeks to strengthen community involvement in education while ensuring that schools remain safe, welcoming and effective learning environments for learners.

“The SDO Calapan City continues to encourage individuals, organizations and institutions to take part in Brigada Eskwela. The program remains a powerful manifestation of unity and shared responsibility, proving that when communities work together, schools and learners benefit the most,” Bautista said. | via Ace Sapit

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) MIMAROPA continues to expand access to technology and digital services across the region through the distribution of computers, tablets, SIM cards and connectivity support for schools, health centers, and underserved communities.

During the opening of National ICT Month 2026, June 1, DICT MIMAROPA Regional Director Emmy Lou V. Delfin cited several initiatives aimed at strengthening digital inclusion and ensuring that more Filipinos benefit from technology-driven opportunities.

Among these is the agency’s partnership with private sector organizations that have helped provide computer equipment to schools and communities across the region.

Delfin said more than 400 computers have already been distributed through various partnerships, including the Gadgets for Good Program of Concentrix.

“Among all regions, the first region that received computers under the Gadgets for Good Program is Palawan,” she said.

The DICT is also preparing to deploy additional computer units to schools in remote areas to support digital learning and improve access to technology.

In the health sector, the agency announced the upcoming turnover of 85 tablets to 85 Barangay Health Stations in Palawan through its telehealth initiative.

The program seeks to improve access to healthcare services by enabling online consultations and digital health services, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

The agency is likewise continuing the implementation of the government’s SIM Card Program for public school beneficiaries.

According to Delfin, MIMAROPA received 108,520 SIM cards, with Palawan accounting for approximately 60,000 units.

More than 103,450 SIM cards have already been distributed to students and teachers, while the remaining SIM cards are being distributed to the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries.

Under the program, the department provides beneficiaries with 25 gigabytes of monthly data allocation for one year, helping support online learning and access to digital resources.

DICT also announced plans to distribute an additional 33,360 SIM cards in the coming months as part of ongoing efforts to improve digital connectivity in the region.

According to the DICT, these initiatives highlight its response to the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure that no Filipino is left behind in the digital age.

Meanwhile, the agency continues to work with local governments, educational institutions, and private sector partners to expand access to technology and digital opportunities throughout MIMAROPA as part of the celebration of National ICT Month 2026 and the government’s broader digital transformation agenda. | via Orlan Jabagat

A total of 860 beneficiaries of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program are deployed to public schools across Oriental Mindoro as part of Brigada Eskwela 2026, providing temporary employment while helping prepare schools for the opening of classes.

The initiative, implemented in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), supports the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to strengthen Brigada Eskwela through greater community participation and volunteerism in ensuring school readiness for the incoming academic year.

Under the program, beneficiaries will receive P455 per day for 10 days of work, equivalent to P4,550 each. The deployment is expected to generate around P3.91 million in wages while beneficiaries carry out campus clean-up drives, landscaping, minor repair works and other school improvement activities.

School officials said the additional workforce will help accelerate the completion of maintenance and rehabilitation efforts ahead of the opening of classes, allowing schools to provide safer and more conducive learning environments for students.

“Basta ‘pag binigyan kami ng TUPAD, salamat. Ituturo namin ‘yung papalinisan, ‘yung ganung area,” said Gina M. Sapungan, Principal III of Camilmil Elementary School in Calapan City, expressing support for the program.

Sapungan noted that even a small number of workers can contribute significantly to school preparation activities when properly assigned and supervised.

“Kasi kung halimbawa, limang tao, kahit lima lang, kung ga-trabaho talaga ‘yan ng two hours, malaki-laki na ‘yung matatrabaho,” she added.

The convergence of Brigada Eskwela and TUPAD is expected to support both education and livelihood objectives by enabling schools to complete pre-opening preparations while providing short-term income opportunities to disadvantaged and displaced workers in local communities.

Brigada Eskwela 2026 officially started nationwide on June 1, mobilizing government agencies, local government units, parents, volunteers and community stakeholders in preparing public schools for the start of classes. | via Jobert Mendoza

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is strengthening its livelihood programs to help overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families build stable income sources as tensions in the Middle East highlight the need for financial security at home

Tristan Perez of OWWA Occidental Mindoro said the agency continues to promote livelihood and reintegration programs that can help returning OFWs and their families earn income and become less dependent on remittances from overseas employment.

He said many OFW households rely heavily on money sent home by family members working abroad, making them vulnerable when workers lose jobs, experience emergencies, or are affected by conflicts and economic problems in host countries.

Perez said 10 OFWs from Occidental Mindoro have already returned home due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The workers sought assistance from the government to facilitate their repatriation to the Philippines.

He said the government assistance for repatriated OFWs usually covers transportation from the host country to Metro Manila. Returning workers are generally responsible for their travel expenses from Manila to their home provinces.

As members of OWWA, some of the affected OFWs received additional assistance from the agency to help cover their transportation from Metro Manila back to Occidental Mindoro, he added.

Perez said five of the repatriated OFWs also sought livelihood assistance to help them start small businesses upon returning home. Through the Emergency Repatriation Fund, two beneficiaries each received P20,000, while three others each received P10,000. The beneficiaries came from the municipalities of San Jose, Sablayan, and Mamburao.

He explained that OFWs who decide to remain in the country may later qualify for the Balik Pinas! Balik Hanapbuhay! Program, a regular OWWA reintegration initiative that provides livelihood support to help returning workers rebuild their sources of income.

Aside from financial assistance, beneficiaries are required to undergo Entrepreneurial Development Training, which covers bookkeeping, marketing, financial management, and business planning. Perez said the training helps improve the chances of sustaining livelihood projects.

OWWA also works with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), local government units, Public Employment Service Offices, and other partners to monitor and strengthen livelihood projects, ensuring that returning OFWs and their families have opportunities to build sustainable income and become more resilient during times of crisis. | via Voltare Dequina

Around 500 members of the Alangan Mangyan tribe received various forms of assistance and essential services during a community outreach program held in Barangay Paitan, Naujan town.

Dubbed “YAKAP-MANGYAN” (Yamang-Lahi Arugain, Kapulisan at Pamayanan), the initiative was led through the partnership of Naujan Eagles Club and the PNP Oriental Mindoro Police Provincial Office (PPO) led by Provincial Director Edison V. Revita.

The outreach activity was conducted at Cornelio Lintawagin Memorial Elementary School in Barangay Paitan and brought together government agencies, civic organizations, local government officials, community leaders and volunteers in a collective effort to promote the welfare and development of indigenous communities.

The event also formed part of the school’s Brigada Eskwela 2026 activities, which carried the theme “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman.”

Beneficiaries, particularly students, received school supplies, slippers, meals through feeding activities and free haircut services. The school also received paint materials and cash assistance to support campus improvement efforts.

The PPO also implemented the “Mangyan Help Desk in the Field,” an initiative designed to bring police services closer to indigenous communities, strengthen public trust and promote inclusive and responsive governance.

Revita said the gesture reflected ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with indigenous communities and ensure that government services reach all sectors of society.

“This activity is proof of the positive outcomes that can be achieved when government agencies, civic organizations and communities unite toward a common goal. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this program,” he said.

Revita added, “We remain steadfast in strengthening partnerships and expanding programs that promote the welfare, empowerment and protection of our indigenous communities.” | via Ace Sapit
