Brgy. Bagbag in Quezon City is home to a replica of the historic Portiuncula Chapel of Assisi where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Francis of Assisi. Located at the Our Lady of the Angels Seminary (OLAS), the Porziuncola Chapel houses a stone relic from the original chapel in Italy enshrined within its altar table. 448 YEARS OF FRANCISCAN PRESENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES

On July 2, 1578, the second group of missionaries, the Order of Friars Minor arrived to assist the Augustinians, who had first come in 1565, in the missionary endeavor of the Church in the Philippine Islands. This group formed the Custody of San Gregorio Magno, whose foundation is attributed to the Franciscan lay brother, the Venerable Fray Antonio de San Gregorio, OFM,

Four centuries after their arrival, in 1978, a Quadricentennial Celebration was held, beginning at San Agustin Church, where the fifteen friars were first welcomed in Intramuros. Now, as we approach the 450th Anniversary of the enduring Franciscan presence in 2028, we continue to honor this legacy of faith.

A historical note: for more than three centuries, Franciscan chroniclers from Fray Francisco de Santa Inés, OFM to the eminent Fray Félix de Huerta, OFM consistently copied the date June 24, 1577 as the arrival of the first missionaries. This tradition gave rise to debate in historical circles. Yet the great Franciscan missiologist Fray Lorenzo Pérez, OFM, of the Province of San Gregorio Magno, who also served as secretary to the last Spanish bishop of Cebu, Most Rev. Martín Alcocer García, OFM, D.D., reexamined the matter and concluded that July 2, 1578 is the more accurate date. It is possible that the missionaries entered Philippine waters on July 1, but their historic entry into the walled city of Manila is rightly commemorated on July 2, 1578.

¡Feliz Día de la Amistad entre Filipinas y España! 🇵🇭🤝🇪🇸
