General information
The PFDA was established as a response to the need to organize and improve the overall system of fish marketing, distribution and post-harvest handling in order to reduce fish spoilage and quality deterioration. Prior to its establishment, the fishing industry was growing at an average of 5.5 % annually but the industry was beset by inadequate marketing infrastructure, poor handling and distribution practices and largely fluctuating prices. These problems led to the creation of the Philippine Fish Marketing Authority (PFMA) through Presidential Decree No. 977 on August 11, 1976. In February 8, 1982, Executive order No. 772 was issued to amend PD 977 by renaming the agency to PFDA and expanding its functions as a government controlled corporation as well as revising the constitution of its Board of Directors.
