The Institute proudly congratulates Professor Rowaldo Del Mundo on his appointment as the new UP System Vice President for Development!

Before his appointment as VP, he was the Associate Dean for Public Engagement of the UP College of Engineering, head of the EEEI Power Systems Simulation Laboratory, and faculty representative to the Board of Trustees of the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. for AY 2026–2027. Prof. Del Mundo earned his bachelor's degree at Adamson University and his master's degree at UPD.

A specialist in power systems, he led a team of UP experts in developing the Smart-Solar Home Systems, which support the National Electrification Administration’s Accelerated Total Electrification Program in bringing electricity to underserved and remote communities.

Congratulations, Prof. Wali! We are very proud of you!

📢EEE NEW FIRST YEAR STUDENTS 📢

Please be reminded that the orientation scheduled later today at 2:00 PM will only be held ONLINE VIA ZOOM due to inclement weather. Zoom meeting details have already been sent via email.

We still look forward to welcoming you to the EEEI community and helping you get started on your journey at EEEI. Please stay safe and dry. Thank you!

This coming 10 August 2026 (Monday), the Institute will have an orientation and Institute briefing for EEEI New First Year Students, Shiftees, and Transferees for AY 2026-2027 at PLDT-Smart Multimedia Lecture Hall, EEE Building at 2:00 PM. There will also be an onboarding session for EEE 11x courses as well as discussions about the Institute, Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), and Scholastic Rules during the event.

Due to limited capacity, we will only accept the first 160 students who opt to join face-to-face. Other students are invited to attend via Zoom since this is also a hybrid event.

Our Academic Program representatives recently visited the University of the Philippines UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP EEEI) to meet with faculty and support the university's embedded systems and FPGA curriculum with Microchip development platforms, including the PolarFire® SoC Discovery Kit and Curiosity Nano Explorer boards.

These tools will help expand hands-on learning and research opportunities while increasing the integration of Microchip technologies across the university's programs. It was also a great opportunity to learn more about UP EEEI's innovative work and further strengthen our partnership in preparing the next generation of engineers.

[FEATURED EEEI PUBLICATION]
Every month, we will be featuring EEEI publications as part of highlighting the exemplary research work of our faculty, researchers, and students.

For August 2026, we feature the paper "Code Design for Duplex Read Sequencing" by EEEI's Dr. Adrian Vidal and his colleagues from Monash University, Dr. Viduranga Bandara Wijekoon and Dr. Emanuele Viterbo.

This paper has also been awarded the International Publication Award by the UP System.

Abstract:
Motivated by duplex read sequencing developed by Oxford Nanopore Technologies, this paper proposes a concatenated coding scheme for nanopore sequencers where DNA sequences are decoded from noisy reads of the template and reverse-complement strands from the same DNA molecule, that is, a duplex read. First, we show that the double-strand pairwise error probability (PEP) bound is multiplicative with respect to the single-strand PEP bounds of the template and reverse-complement codebooks, thus giving duplex decoders significantly lower error rates compared to simplex decoders which only use the template strand. Then, we propose a decoder for multiple concatenations of short codebooks designed using the double-strand PEP bound.
