📜 Today in History: The Birth of Ragay, Camarines Sur
On this day, April 15, 1753, the town of Ragay officially stepped into its own, marking its independence from its mother town, Lupi.
The story of Ragay is one of incredible resilience and transformation:
A Melting Pot: Originally a visita along the Paculago River, it served as a cultural crossroads for Bicol, Tagalog, and Visayan speakers.
Survival & Refuge: Faced with frequent Moro pirate raids, the community showed immense grit, moving upstream for protection and naming their sanctuary "Hagay" (meaning "single").
A Twist of Fate: The name we use today, "Ragay," actually stems from a 19th-century miscommunication! A Spanish soldier misheard a local resident, and what started as a clerical error became a lasting symbol of the town's identity.
From a small settlement to a thriving municipality, Ragay’s history reminds us that even names born from misunderstanding can carry the weight of centuries of perseverance.
