From arriving in Russia to dying on the Donbas battlefield in roughly six weeks.

Ukraine’s military intelligence identified Filipino national Jeric Jumadil Undol, who signed a contract with Russia on May 3 after arriving in April. After only about a week of training, he was sent to the front and killed in late May during an assault in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast.

His case reflects a broader Russian system that recruits foreigners from around the world with promises of money and other incentives, then rapidly sends many into high-risk combat. At least 27,000 foreign nationals from more than 130 countries have joined Russia’s military since 2022, according to a recent report.
