The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) MIMAROPA has launched the 2025–2026 edition of the Pamilihang Bayan ng Bidang Mamimili (PBBM), a regional search recognizing public markets that promote consumer welfare, fair trade practices and effective market management.

Public markets from across the MIMAROPA region will compete for the title of Most Consumer-Friendly Public Market based on their compliance with consumer protection and fair trade laws, quality of market facilities and operations, consumer advocacy programs and innovative management practices.

The evaluation will also consider consumer pulse ratings, promotional videos submitted by participating local government units, and on-site assessments conducted by the Regional Evaluation Committee.

The committee is composed of representatives from the DTI Consumer Policy and Advocacy Bureau, DTI MIMAROPA, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Agriculture (DA), and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in MIMAROPA.

Assessment and validation activities are now underway, with the winner set to be announced during the OBRA MIMAROPA Regional Trade Show this third quarter of the year.

In 2024, the municipality of Bongabong in Oriental Mindoro won the regional title after introducing innovations such as its e-Palengke initiative, which digitized the buying and selling of locally produced goods.

“We believe that consumerism is very active in public markets. Public markets create economic opportunities for small entrepreneurs while providing consumers with access to safe, healthy, and quality locally produced goods,” DTI MIMAROPA Regional Director Amormio C.J.S. Benter said.

Benter added the search aims to encourage local government units to strengthen consumer protection, improve public market services, and adopt innovative practices that benefit both vendors and consumers. | via Ace Sapit/With information & photo from DTI MIMAROPA
