A claim from social media is stirring debate again.

Posts shared on Chinese social media have been circulating the idea that Palawan was once part of China, calling it "Zheng He Island" after the Ming dynasty explorer Zheng He. Some of the posts even argued that the Philippine island should be "returned" to China, claiming Zheng He had discovered it centuries ago.

Philippine authorities have strongly pushed back against the narrative. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said there is no historical or legal basis for those claims, emphasizing that Palawan has always been part of the Philippines. The agency also pointed out that simply visiting or exploring a place does not give a country ownership over it.

Historians also note that Palawan had already been inhabited for tens of thousands of years before Zheng He's voyages, much like the long-standing reminder that Christopher Columbus did not arrive in an empty America. The NHCP further clarified that the Chinese government itself has not made any official claim over Palawan.

Today, Palawan continues to be internationally recognized as Philippine territory. It also raises an interesting question about the modern influence of historical narratives: when old voyages are used to support present-day arguments, where should we draw the line between history, misinformation, and national identity?

Nature's Ultimate Endurance Champion

One of the most extraordinary migrations on Earth belongs to the juvenile Bar-tailed Godwit. At only five months old, this young shorebird accomplished a journey that few animals can match.

🌎 Flight Route: Alaska → Tasmania, Australia
📏 Distance Covered: Approximately 13,558 km (8,425 miles)
⏳ Travel Time: 11 consecutive days
✈️ One Incredible Flight: No landing, no feeding, and no drinking along the way.

Before departure, the bird stores large fat reserves that fuel its nonstop flight while its body efficiently conserves energy. This remarkable migration highlights the incredible adaptations that allow wildlife to survive across vast distances.

The Bar-tailed Godwit remains one of the world's greatest long-distance migrants—a powerful reminder of the amazing endurance and resilience found in nature

China's "Great Green Wall" Shows Strong Forest Growth

Since 1978, China has planted an estimated 66 billion trees through its Great Green Wall initiative, a massive reforestation program designed to slow the spread of the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts, reduce soil erosion, and restore damaged landscapes.

A recent scientific study found that these planted forests are producing new leaves significantly faster than nearby natural forests. Even after accounting for differences in climate, forest age, and tree species, researchers found the plantations still grew about 4.6% faster.

The rapid growth is linked to the forests' relatively young age, the planting of fast-growing species such as poplar and eucalyptus, and ongoing forest management practices. Today, planted forests make up roughly 7% of the world's forest cover and play an increasingly important role in global reforestation.

Researchers note that these forests can capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) quickly during their early years, helping combat climate change. However, they stress that natural forests remain irreplaceable for preserving biodiversity, maintaining healthy ecosystems, and storing carbon over the long term.

The Tablas Drongo (Dicrurus menagei) is a rare species of drongo found only on Tablas Island in Romblon Province, Philippines. Because it exists nowhere else in the world, it is considered an endemic bird of the Philippines.
