With sacks of collected waste in hand and sand on their feet and mud-covered boots beneath the shores and mangroves, volunteers from different sectors gathered at the Pilar Mangrove Beach Forest in Barangay San Ramon, Pilar, Capiz on May 28, 2026, united by one goal โ€” to help protect the environment and preserve the provinceโ€™s coastal resources.

The Coastal Clean-Up Drive, spearheaded by the Capiz Provincial Government under Governor Fredenil H. Castro through the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO), in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Pilar and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), formed part of the celebration of the Month of the Ocean and MENRO Day.

Community organizations, youth groups, non-government organizations, volunteers, and environmental workers joined hands in clearing waste and debris scattered along the shoreline and mangrove forest. Beyond the clean-up effort, the activity served as a reminder of the important role mangroves play in protecting coastal communities from environmental threats while sustaining marine biodiversity.

The event also highlighted the power of community participation in building a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for future generations.

In the evening MENRO Day Celebration, Environment and Natural Resources Officer Mr. Ronald Allan F. Cullo, EnP., emphasized the importance of unity and shared responsibility in environmental protection. He encouraged the public to continue supporting programs that promote environmental awareness, proper waste management, and the conservation of natural resources toward a more sustainable and resilient community.

Sigma, Capiz - The Provincial Government of Capiz, through the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO), conducted a community-based clean-up and tree-growing activity on May 21, 2026, in partnership with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and the Local Government Unit of Sigma led by Mayor Dante Rizal A. Eslabon.

CaPENRO personnel conducted orientations on proper waste segregation and correct seedling planting techniques. During the activity, participants collected 180.55 kilograms of waste materials and planted 300 seedlings along the bypass road area of Sigma.

The initiative gathered support from LGU Sigma, PNP-Sigma, BFP-Sigma, barangay officials, BHWs, tanods, volunteers, and personnel from MENRO and CaPENRO, aiming to promote environmental protection, proper waste management, and community participation in conservation efforts.

The Capiz Provincial Government, led by Governor Fredenil H. Castro, through the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO), successfully conducted the โ€œEnhancing Community Safety through Capacity Development of Local Government Solid Waste Management Workers, Sorters, and Collectorsโ€ on May 13โ€“14, 2026.

In his welcome message delivered on behalf of Mr. Ronald Allan F. Cullo, EnP., ENR Officer, Mr. Wilmon C. Alinsangan emphasized the vital role of waste workers in maintaining clean and healthy communities. โ€œKamo indi lang waste collector kag sorterโ€ฆ kamo may dako nga papel ngaa malimpyo ang aton palibot!โ€ he stated, recognizing the contribution of SWM workers to public health, tourism, and environmental protection.

Mrs. Ma. Lyn Ronzales presented the rationale of the activity, emphasizing the importance of empowering SWM workers through continuous learning initiatives. Ms. Cherry T. Calapa-an also discussed the revisitation of Republic Act No. 9003, focusing on the roles and responsibilities of local government units in implementing effective solid waste management programs.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nidalyn P. Agsaluna, SWM Section Chief of EMB Region VI, discussed the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of 2022 or R.A. 11898, including updates on R.A. 9003 and the importance of shared responsibility in waste reduction and recovery efforts. Engr. Joemarie Eugene Gonzalez also shared insights on Occupational Health and Safety for SWM workers, while interactive activities were conducted to strengthen teamwork, camaraderie, and active participation among the participants.

On the second day, participants conducted an educational visit to Justine Junkshop located in Brgy. Pakiad, Oton, Iloilo. Mr. Steven O. Segovia, General Manager of the facility, discussed various innovative ways to help mitigate waste problems and support LGUs in improving solid waste management practices through recycling and proper waste diversion initiatives.

The activity reaffirmed the Provincial Government of Capizโ€™s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, community safety, and the welfare of solid waste management workers who play a significant role in protecting the environment and maintaining cleaner communities.
