HOW BRGY. LIONG ROXAS CITY GOT ITS NAME
There was a magnificent place surrounded by lustrous bamboos, coconuts, and other verdant flora. Mountain capped the lovely village where the old folks peacefully lived and earned their living by planting different root crops and vegetables.
It was told that during eighteenth century, the Spaniards were looking for their other groups who traversed the other way and still did not return the hometown. It was also on this month that the village people went out to the lowland to plant vegetables for the climate during this season was favorable for the growing plants. As this group of Spaniards came to this place, they were thinking that the other groups they were looking for might be somewhere here. They found the place soothing and the people seemed industrious.
As they passed by in a rice paddy where clear water was flowing, they got more interested to know the name of the place. They stopped and asked them, “What is this place called?” The two folks stopped their works and saw the curiosity on the faces of the Spaniards and noticed that they were looking of what they had planted. So, the two of them answered proudly in unison, “Lieng and Abalong”, pointing to the plants. The Spaniards heard the first and last syllables of the names of the plant and they though that was the name of the place. “Li-ong, Li-ong, Li-ong!”, as they repeated its name. When the Spaniards returned to the Poblacion, they told others of the place they passed by. And to make sure they would not forget its name, they registered it in the authorities
Today the place is known as Barangay Liong, one of the 47 Barangays of Roxas City. The place is located at the southern part of Roxas City a land area of 184,400 hectares.
