DTI Quezon through Negosyo Center San Andres conducts Training on Ubi Production and Postharvest Handling

14 September 2022 – The Department of Trade and Industry- Quezon through Negosyo Center San Andres in partnership with Office of the Municipal Agriculturist and with the support of Local Government Unit of San Andres, conducted a Training on Ubi Production and Postharvest Handling. It was attended by agri-business sector composed of Ubi farmers, members of San Andres Agriculture Cooperative (SAAC), San Andres Corn Farmers Scientist Association (SACFSA), and Dao Inanuran Mayantoc Farmers Association (DIMFA). It was also attended by Mayor Ralph Edward B. Lim and Municipal Administrator Ferdinand P. Lacbayo, representative from Quezon Federation and Union of Cooperatives (QFUC) headed by Mr. Dennis Cocadiz, Business Development Division Chief Anna Marie V. Quincina, Municipal Agriculturist Agnes R. Caagbay, and also our Business Counselor of Negosyo Center San Andres Alexis M. Alcantara.

The resource person for the said training was Ms. Ginalyn D. Bocaya, Science Research Specialist II under Research Division of Department of Agriculture RFO-CALABARZON assisted by Mr. Ruben R. Perlas, Agriculturist II. She discussed the Planting Guide for Ubi, Cultivation Needs and Cultural Management, Trellising Methods, and other factors needed for Ubi Production. It was followed by an interactive open forum between the resource person and participants wherein they talked about the factual experiences faced by the Ubi farmers while planting and was supplied through effective planting practices as suggested by the resource person to grow more Ubi in San Andres and to supply demands of the expanding market of Ubi and Ube products not just in the locality but globally. The training went well and was ended by a closing remarks of the Municipal Agriculturist Agnes R. Caagbay.

The participants extended their sincerest gratitude to the department and facilitators of the training because it encourages them to pursue planting Ubi in San Andres to supply the large demands in the market nowadays. One of the participants said “Thank you so much for the clear discussion and knowledge imparted to us by the excellent resource person and may there be more trainings/seminars like this for actual demonstration per barangays. God bless!”

This event focuses on the products of the MSMEs that have undergone DTI’s various product development programs and interventions.

This year, the KALAKAL Quezon: Cacao FuZiON 2022 will highlight the best cacao-based products to continually promote and strengthen the cacao industry in CALABARZON, especially in Quezon. Cacao products of the local processors such as chocolates, tableya, spread, choco brittle, cakes & pastries, cookies, chips, wines and lampshades, and other decors with fossilized cacao leaves accent will be showcased to gain access to the local market, generate sales and identify new buyers.

The event also aims to strengthen the linkages among various stakeholders involved in the Cacao Industry.
