| DTI promotes coffee production to boost local supply, farmer livelihoods in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) β€” The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the Ilocos Region is promoting coffee production as a potential livelihood and local enterprise opportunity for upland communities, starting with the planting of 100 coffee trees in Amontok, San Gabriel, La Union, on October 1.

The activity, held in celebration of International Coffee Day, brought together participants from government and non-government organizations who planted 100 Robusta coffee seedlings provided by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 1.

Robusta is among the coffee varieties grown in the highlands of Ilocos Sur and is being promoted as one of the options for communities with suitable areas for coffee production.

DTI Ilocos Regional Director Merlie Membrere said the activity responds to the growing demand for coffee in the province amid limited local production.

β€œWe see the coffee industry with so much potential. It is also one of the industries we support,” she said.
