BE EL NIÑO-READY • For farmers in Agusan del Sur, being El Niño-ready means taking action before dry conditions begin to affect crops, livestock, and precious water resources.

From conserving water and using drought-tolerant crops to applying mulch, adjusting planting schedules, and practicing water-efficient farming, simple but timely measures can help farms withstand prolonged dry conditions. Farmers are also encouraged to provide livestock with adequate water, shade, feed, and ventilation, while staying updated on advisories from PAGASA and local agriculture offices.

AN HONOR CONFERRED, A PURPOSE RENEWED 👨‍🎓

The Agusan del Sur State University conferred Cong Eddiebong Plaza with the Doctor of Agriculture degree, Honoris Causa as a fitting recognition of his lifelong commitment to agriculture, the Filipino farmers, Indigenous Peoples, and the sustainable development of Agusan del Sur.

More than an academic distinction, the conferment honored Cong Plaza’s vision which he has consistently pursued: an agriculture strengthened by science, innovation, and evidence-based policy. He is the first Filipino conferred with the Doctor of Agriculture degree, Honoris Causa.

From championing Philippine soil health and scientific agriculture to pitching for agriculture research laboratories in the provinces and state universities and stronger partnerships among government, the academe, scientists, and farming communities, his advocacy has always been rooted in one belief: our farmers deserve the best that science can offer.

During his commencement speech to the Hiraya Class, the first graduating class of ADSSU, he urged for an even greater partnerships in making Agusan del Sur the national center for agricultural research and innovation—starting with healthy soil, empowered farmers, and communities that prosper from their land.
