Congressman Leody โOdieโ Tarriela, of the Lone District of the Province of Occidental Mindoro, boasted about his Province posting a double-digit economic growth of 11.2% percent, thus emerging as the countryโs top performing local economy. This was reflected in the 2025 Economic Performance Report released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) last August 28, 2026.

While detailed sectoral drivers for this growth are yet to be released, one of the perceived key drivers is the resolution of the Province's power crisis.
Tarriela, since his first election, has endeavored to resolve Occidental Mindoroโs persistent power issues. He was relentless in his coordination with various agencies such as Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), National Electrification Administration (NEA) and the National Power Corporation (Napocor). He was also steadfast in cracking the whip with the local power distributor, the Occidental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (OMECO), and its power suppliers.

With the establishment of new power infrastructures came the large infusion of capital into the local economy during the past years. These were primarily through investments of both the government and private firms to key sectors such as agriculture, power, transport and infrastructure.
โFor the year 2025 alone, Occidental Mindoro surpassed other agencies and overtook the countryโs 4.4% gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

The improvement in the power situation continues with the establishment of a 7.4MW solar power plant in San Jose town. The public infrastructure investments was matched by privately constructed cold storage facilities, batch mix plants, diagnostic centers/hospitals, schools and shipyards. These fueled the economic activity of local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It created job opportunities for local workers. It increased the purchasing power of consumers.
Even tourism contributed to the economic growth. With stable electricity and increased road and transport networks, accessibility to tourist sites and destinations became easier.
โStrong Legislative - Executive cooperation, paired with National - Local coordination have contributed to shaping budget policies and ensure smooth implementation of national government programs in the Province of Occidental Mindoro. The Provinceโs strong 2025 economic performance shows that resolution of the longstanding power crisis, paired with national government investments, can drive private sector participation. When matched with strong local MSME involvement and support from local governments, local economies can transform and improve for the benefit of the general population.โ, concluded Tarriela.
