Strengthening collaboration towards a healthier and more nutrition-secure Region II! 🌾🤝💚
The Philippine Rice Research Institute and National Nutrition Council Region II last May 18, 2026 conducted a coordination meeting aimed at reinforcing partnership initiatives that contribute to the fight against malnutrition and the promotion of healthier food systems in the region.
During the meeting, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC) Rommel Teofilo Aguilar presented an overview of the National Nutrition Council, highlighting its mandate, programs, and continuing efforts to address malnutrition through strengthened multi-sectoral collaboration. He also expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with PhilRice-Isabela and emphasized the significant role that innovative and nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions can play in improving the nutritional status of communities across Cagayan Valley.
Meanwhile, Ms. Charlene R. Bumanglag, Communication Stakeholder and Engagement Officer for the Healthier Rice Program of PhilRice, joined by Mr. Dante L. Andres, delivered an orientation on the agency’s Healthier Rice Program. She discussed how the initiative promotes rice varieties with high Zinc content and low glycemic index as healthier food options that can contribute to better nutrition outcomes and support disease prevention efforts.
The presentation also highlighted the adoption of these healthier rice varieties by several local government units in Region II, including the municipalities of Delfin Albano, Amulung, and Cabarroguis. These LGUs have integrated the healthier rice varieties into their dietary supplementary programs, demonstrating their commitment to promoting nutritious and accessible food interventions for their constituents.
Recognizing the potential impact of the Healthier Rice Program in advancing nutrition advocacy and public awareness, the National Nutrition Council Region II also invited PhilRice to present the program during the 2026 Nutrition Month Launch on July 1, 2026, in Tuguegarao City. The event is expected to serve as an important platform in showcasing innovative nutrition-sensitive initiatives and encouraging wider support from stakeholders and local government units throughout the region.
This strengthened partnership between PhilRice-Isabela and NNC Region II reflects a shared commitment to advancing food and nutrition security through collaborative action, innovation, and community-centered programs. Together, both agencies continue to champion sustainable solutions that empower communities, improve health outcomes, and create a healthier future for every Filipino family. 🌾🍚💪
