Twenty years ago, the sinking of M/T Solar 1 off the southern coast of Guimaras caused a major marine oil spill that affected coastal ecosystems, communities, fisheries, and livelihoods.

The experience underscored the importance of having a science-based and systematic approach to oil-spill response and shoreline rehabilitation.

One of the key tools is the Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (S**T)—a structured process used to assess and document oiled shorelines, guide cleanup and treatment recommendations, establish monitoring endpoints, and support informed environmental decision-making.

Through Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-05, or the Guimaras Environment Code, S**T is incorporated into the Province’s oil-spill response framework.

As part of the updating of the 10-Year Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plan, current data on the province's solid waste management system, key issues and concerns, targets, and strategic interventions were consolidated using the provided Vision Reality Gap Analysis (VRGA) Matrix. This planning activity aims to develop a comprehensive roadmap that will improve solid waste management practices, promote environmental sustainability, and encourage the active participation of local government units (LGUs), barangays, stakeholders, and households.

The two-day activity was conducted on July 29–30, 2026 at the CAVES Conference Room, Capitol Compound, San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras. It was attended by representatives from the three participating Local Government Units (LGUs) of Nueva Valencia, Buenavista and San Lorenzo. The activity was facilitated through the guidance and technical assistance of the DENR–Environmental Management Bureau Region VI (Solid Waste Management Unit) in collaboration with the Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO).

Updated plans. Shared hands for greener lands. 🌿

The Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO) conducted the Briefing for 54 barangays with Forest and Forestland for the Updating of the Island Forest Land Use Plan (IFLUP) on July 29, 2026, at the Function Room, 2nd Floor, Kapitolyo Probinsyal sang Guimaras.

During the briefing, Mr. Leonard S. Pasiderio, Provincial ENR Officer, emphasized that the IFLUP is more than just a document—it serves as a roadmap for guiding and regulating development within the province's forest and forestland (FFL) areas. He highlighted the need to address the increasing pressures from economic activities while ensuring the sustainable management and protection of Guimaras' remaining forestlands, which comprise only 9% of the province's total land area.

For. Juneline S. de la Cruz, presented the rationale for the Updating of the IFLUP. She also discussed the preliminary activities undertaken, including the reconstitution of the Technical Working Group (TWG) and the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Updating of the IFLUP.

Ms. Marjolene A. Landero, discussed the purpose of the socio-economic survey, the information to be collected, the barangay’s roles in the survey, and the target respondents during the survey. For. Ma. Angelica E. Dela Cruz, presented the procedures for community mapping and field validation. She also discussed possible questions to be asked during the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for community mapping, the types of data to be collected from participants, and the maps that would be used to identify and validate important community features, natural resources, land uses, and other relevant information within the FFL barangays. Participants were barangay officials of the 54 barangays with FFL in the province.

The Mineral Resource Management and Geosciences Section personnel of the Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO) conducted the monthly monitoring and inspection of all active quarry areas in the province on July 22–23, 2026.
Fourteen (14) active and operational quarry projects were inspected to assess their ongoing operations, methods of extraction, and compliance with the terms and conditions of their permits. Most quarry operators were generally compliant with the terms and conditions stipulated in their permits, Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) and Environmental Protection Enhancement Program (EPEP). However, minor discrepancies were noted in some areas, and the concerned permit holders were advised to undertake the necessary corrective measures to address the identified deficiencies.
The regular monitoring and inspection aims to ensure that quarry operations are conducted responsibly, safely, and in accordance with existing environmental and mining regulations, while promoting the sustainable utilization of the province's mineral resources.

The Provincial Government of Guimaras, through the Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO), conducted the Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment (PCRA) on July 16, 2026 at Olivia's Kitchen, to gather information from key stakeholders for the formulation of the Integrated Coastal Land and Sea Use Zoning Plan (ICLSUZP) of the Municipality of Jordan.

The workshop identified the existing coastal and marine resources, their current uses, and the key issues, concerns, and management recommendations for the municipality's eight coastal barangays. The assessment provided valuable inputs for the development of a science-based and participatory zoning plan.

The activity was attended by the Punong Barangays, Barangay Kagawads -Chairpersons ,Committees on Fisheries and Environment, members of the Barangay Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils (BFARMCs), the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC), Fish Wardens, fisherfolk representatives.
Technical personnel from the Municipal Local Government Unit (MENRO, Municipal Agriculture Office, and Municipal Planning and Development Office), as well as representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) provided assistance during the one day workshop.

JORDAN, Guimaras — Blue swimming crab (BSC) stakeholders, local government units, and environment agencies convened in Guimaras on July 13, 2026 to discuss the province's role in the Philippines' response to NOAA Fisheries' denial of the country's Comparability Finding under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, with talks focused on strengthening protection measures for dugong, sea turtles, Irrawaddy Dolphins, and other marine wildlife in the Guimaras Strait.

TTGINP | On July 07, 2026 the Taklong and Tandog Group of Islands Natural Park (TTGINP) officially commenced the celebration of its 1st Anniversary as a Legislated Protected Area with the "Imbukada", a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Historical Exhibit and Ecological Information Display, showcasing the rich history, milestones, and conservation efforts that have shaped TTGINP into one of the country's protected natural treasures.

The ceremony was led by DENR Region VI OIC–Regional Executive Director Atty. Ramar Niel V. Pascua, with the support of the Municipal Local Government Unit of Nueva Valencia headed by Mayor Emmanuel C. Galila, together with MENRO Aljun Margallo and PAMB Members. Also present was Protected Area Superintendent Rhett Arthur A. Diana, who presented the historical timeline, significant achievements, and conservation milestones of TTGINP, highlighting its role as a benchmark for biodiversity protection and sustainable ecotourism strategies for future generations.

Adding color and excitement to the celebration were Paw-Paw and Ban-Ban, the official flagship species mascots of TTGINP, who delighted guests and symbolized the park's commitment to protecting its unique wildlife and marine ecosystems.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, may this exhibit inspire greater appreciation, stewardship, and collective action in preserving the natural heritage of TTGINP for generations to come. The exhibit was open and free to everyone to fill in their curiosity about TTGINP.
