Every July 7, Japan celebrates the Tanabata Festival, also known as the Star Festival. During this special occasion, people write their wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches.

The festival is based on the legendary love story of Orihime and Hikoboshi, two heavenly lovers who were separated because of their forbidden love. According to the legend, they are allowed to meet only once a year—on July 7. It is believed that if the weather is clear and the stars are visible, the two lovers will reunite, and wishes written on the tanzaku are more likely to come true. However, if it rains, the lovers are unable to meet because the river separating them cannot be crossed, and people believe that their wishes may not be granted that year.
