The lantern of "El Faro de Cabo Engaño" on Palaui Island, Santa Ana, Cagayan was first lit in 1892. It was built during the Spanish colonial period.
This picture was taken in 1902. Four years after the Spanish were defeated during the Spanish-American War marking the end of Spanish rule.
Notice the beautiful iron lantern room and copula on top of the tower as wel as the magnificent cast iron gate and fence. All of this sadly disappeared.
Is that someone looking at us through that window of the lantern room? Creepy... 👻

1852:
Did you know.....that Sinago Cove (Located in Brgy. Patunungan - Santa Ana) was already documented on a 1852 hand drawn map? The area used to be called ‘Puerto y Rio Tinagu’ which is Spanish for ´Tinagu Port and River’.
Although it’s not an exact science, some research taught me that the word ‘Tinagu’ might come from a word used by some Pygmy people: ´Tinaku’ which means ‘to sprout’ or ‘to conceive’. This term might refer to the shape of the cove. With some imagination Sinago Cove makes you think of a sprouting seed/fruit or even a woman carrying a child.
So my guess: ‘Tinaku’ > ‘Tinagu’ > ‘Sinago’.
The name of the full map is ‘Islas Filipinas, Primera Hoja Central’, issued by Dr. Morata and Francisco Coello of Madrid, Spain.

Good day history enthusiasts,
On this day, the 10th of September, 2019, Trevor Taylor and I, Jarl Permentier, started up the "SAHA" - Santa Ana Historical Association.
We would like to focus on historical facts that happened in Santa Ana - Cagayan and it's nearby municipals.

In our opinion it's time that there is an association who will document as much as possible about any historical event in this town. We would like to find information about old buildings, the great war, ports, trade, tribes that settled here, plants and animals who might be discovered here and so on...

You can help us:
-Do you or your parents/grandparents have anything interesting to tell us?
-Do you have any old (black&white) photos from Santa Ana? We would like to scan them for safe-keeping. We'd like to hear the story about the picture.
-Do you own old maps, artifacts,...
-...
Don't be shy to contact us.

We will update you regularly about our findings. One of our goals is to visit local schools and teach the young generation about all the things that happened in this municipality, even before it was called Santa Ana.

Then you would know where you coming from" - Bob Marley
