Sta. Cruz Green Eagles Defend Throne in Provincial Meet 2025

The Municipality of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur made history once again by defending its overall champion title at the Piskay 2025 Provincial Meet held over the weekend.

Carrying the moniker Green Eagles, Sta. Cruz athletes soared high in their respective sports, fueling a massive medal haul of 111 Gold, 100 Silver, and 54 Bronze medals.

Last year, Sta. Cruz marked a significant milestone in sports by winning its first overall title in the municipality's history.

All this glory was accomplished during the reign of Mayor Jose Nelson "Tata" Sala, who provided ample resources and support for the athletes' training and preparation.

Sta. Cruz is aiming for a three-peat as it hosts the Provincial Meet next year.

Mayor Sala personally received the award on behalf of the Sta. Cruz delegation, underscoring his commitment to local athletes.

District Supervisor Dr. Hazel Luna recounted that it was only under Mayor Sala's term that Sta. Cruz Green Eagles won back-to-back titles.

Mayor Sala, meanwhile, vowed to continue his support for the athletes of Sta. Cruz as they prepare for the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet.

Sta. Cruz LGU Records Biggest Tax Collection in Municipal History

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, under the transparent leadership of Mayor Jose Nelson Sala collected a total of P401,600,379.32 in local taxes in 2024—more than four times the tax collection in 2016.

These figures are, by far, the highest locally sourced revenue ever recorded in the municipal history of Sta. Cruz.

The taxes were collected from business permits, real property taxes (RPT), fees, and charges within the Local Economic Enterprise.

In 2016, under the previous administration, Sta. Cruz collected only P96,066,861.06. This was followed by P149 million 2017, P160 million in 2018, P170 million in 2019, P173 million in 2020, and P179 million in 2021.

After Mayor Sala's transition in 2022, the LGU collected P228 million, followed by a remarkable P276 million in 2023.

Mayor Sala attributed this success to transparent governance.

He added: “Pwede man gud nga pagamyon lang ang pagkwenta sa mga tax ug RPT kay muhatag na lang sila sa mayor para makatipid sila, pero ang lungsod ang pildi ana kay mugamay ang kwarta nga masulod sa munisipyo para sa mga programa ug proyekto para sa tao."

Mayor Tata Sala Strengthens Anti-Illegal Drugs Campaign in Sta. Cruz

Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur – Mayor Jose Nelson "Tata" Sala launched a stronger campaign against illegal drugs during the first flag-raising ceremony of 2025 on Monday, January 6.

Speaking to local government employees, barangay captains, and department heads, Mayor Sala announced surprise drug testing, which was conducted immediately after the event.

Mayor Sala said the campaign should start from them and extends to all 18 barangays of the Municipality.

“We must protect our community’s progress and ensure it remains drug-free,” Mayor Sala said in vernacular with hopes to not only maintain the Local Government’s milestones achieved but transcend its recent accomplishments anchored in good governance.

As part of the campaign, Mayor Sala also required job applicants in the municipality to present a negative drug test result, calling on all families to keep their homes safe from illegal drugs.

The initiative aims to keep Sta. Cruz a safe and progressive community for everyone.
