PRESS RELEASE
DOST-PAGASA S&T Media Services
Quezon City, 23 September 2026

DOST-PAGASA warns of an intensifying Very Strong El Niño through the first half of 2027.

A Strong El Niño is currently active in the Tropical Pacific and is expected to intensify into a Very Strong El Niño between September–December 2026, potentially persisting through the first half of 2027.

For the Philippines, this may bring warmer temperatures and below-normal rainfall, increasing the risk of dry spells, drought, and water supply stress that could affect agriculture, food security, energy, public health, and the economy.

However, El Niño does not mean that rain will completely stop. The ongoing Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and active tropical cyclones may still bring short-term heavy rainfall, particularly over the western sections of the country.

Prepare for prolonged dryness, but remain vigilant for episodes of heavy rainfall.

There’s nearly no doubt that the intensifying El Niño will persist through February 2027.

Forecasts from WMO’s Global Producing Centres show that El Nino is expected to continue intensifying into a very strong event in the coming months, peaking towards the end of 2026.

El Niño impacts – including on global temperatures and rainfall patterns – will be felt well into 2027.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?

“The powerful 2023/2024 El Niño contributed to 2024 being the warmest year on record. We should not be surprised if this record is broken,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.

The risks of floods, droughts and extreme weather may multiply and cascade as El Niño becomes stronger.

Climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, trade, fisheries, health, energy, transport, water resources, disaster management will be particularly affected.

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆?

No. The strength of an El Niño event alone does not determine how severe its impacts will be in any individual country or region. The location, season and other climate drivers also influence the impacts in a particular area.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services provide the official warnings and climate information relevant to local communities.

THE TRAINING ENDS. THE READINESS BEGINS. 🛟

DAY 5 | WASAR TRAINING — SIMULATION & RETURN DEMONSTRATION

Five days. Countless drills. Sweaty faces. Challenging scenarios. And one ultimate goal—to be ready when a life is on the line. ❤️‍🔥

Today, our Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) trainees faced their final challenge as they put everything they learned into action through the Simulation and Return Demonstration.

This was more than just a final activity.

It was a moment where knowledge became action, training became confidence, and teamwork became a lifeline. 🛟🌊

Every command.
Every movement.
Every rescue technique.
Every second mattered.

Because in an actual emergency, there is no room for hesitation. Someone may be waiting for a rescuer—and that rescuer must be ready.

👏 CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR WASAR TRAINEES!

Five days of intensive training may have come to an end, but the skills, discipline, and lessons gained will continue to make a difference when it matters most.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our dedicated TRAINORS and the TaRSIER 117 Team for sharing your expertise, time, experience, and passion for saving lives. 🫡❤️

Your guidance went beyond teaching rescue techniques—you helped shape responders who are more prepared, more confident, and more committed to protecting our communities.

To our trainers, TaRSIER 117, and everyone who made this training possible—THANK YOU FOR HELPING US BUILD A STRONGER AND MORE DISASTER-READY COMMUNITY. 🌊🛟

The training may be over, but the mission continues.

When the waters rise, when someone calls for help, when every second counts—MAY WE BE READY.

Because behind every trained responder is a promise:

“I will be ready. I will respond. I will do everything I can to bring someone home.” ❤️‍🩹

TRAINED! TESTED! READY TO RESCUE!

CAMBAGUI YOUTH DAYS 2026 | EMPOWERING THE YOUTH: BUILDING A RESILIENT COMMUNITY

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Sevilla actively participated in the Cambagui Youth Days held on August 29, 2026, at the Cabaje Covered Court, Cambagui, Sevilla, Bohol, with the theme “Empowering the Youth: Building a Resilient Community.”

The activity was facilitated by Mr. Christian Salce, Lead Responder; Ms. Rose Ann D. Patac, Assistant on Trainings; and Mr. Aries J. Patac, RN, DRRM-H, who guided the youth participants through a series of disaster preparedness and emergency response activities.

As part of the activity, the participants underwent a refresher session on Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), as well as Standard First Aid (SFA). The refresher was conducted to reinforce the knowledge and practical skills they had previously acquired during their training last year and to ensure continued readiness in responding to emergency situations.

The participants then took part in the Cambagui Youth Rescuelympics, where their skills, teamwork, coordination, and ability to respond under pressure were put to the test. The competition was conducted from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM and featured three major emergency response skills:

🔹 BLS-CPR – demonstrating proper and timely response to a cardiac emergency
🔹 Carry Techniques – showcasing safe and appropriate methods of moving and transporting an injured or incapacitated person
🔹 Bandaging – demonstrating proper techniques in providing immediate first aid for wounds and injuries

Through this initiative, the MDRRMO Sevilla continues to strengthen the capacity of the youth and encourage them to become prepared, capable, and responsible partners in disaster risk reduction and community resilience.

The activity further emphasizes that an empowered youth is an essential part of a safer, stronger, and more resilient community.

Empowering the Youth. Building Skills. Strengthening Resilience.

Understanding El Niño starts with building resilience.

As our climate continues to change, being informed is one of the best ways to prepare. El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that can bring prolonged dry spells, water shortages, and extreme heat, affecting our communities, agriculture, and daily lives.

Stay informed. Conserve water. Be prepared. Together, we can reduce risks and build a more resilient future.
