According to the early settlers of the area the original named was Puntacilla, located at the southern tip of the coast of Murcielagos Bay. It was called Puntacilla, because this was the point or Punta were Cilla a Beautiful maiden used to watch the sea and waited in vain for her lover Sulong to come home. iewed from a certain point for beyond the sea, looked like a chin of a person lying down. The place is a Fertile Valley or Luwang rimed with white beaches. But because of the inconvenience in calling it Suwang, the settlers decided through the council of elders to name it Sawang until it was legally created and registered officially. Barangay Sawang was created officially on July 9, 1959 and was one of the Barangay of Dapitan City during the past long years. But the other Seniors say that Sawang was created on July 9, 1901.
