Community Walkthrough | 🗓️ August 7, 2026
A meaningful Community Walkthrough was conducted in Barangay Silingan together with the Barangay Resilience Team (BResT), with the full support of the barangay officials led by Barangay Captain Jesus Agnote. The activity provided an opportunity to observe the community’s current condition, identify hazard-prone areas, and listen to the experiences of residents who are directly affected by these risks.
During the walkthrough, the BResT identified flooding as one of the major hazards affecting the community, particularly during heavy rains and typhoons. Flooding can affect homes, roads, and the livelihoods of families who depend the resources around them.
The coastal area is especially vulnerable during typhoons, as strong winds, waves, and rising water can damage or destroy pumpboats and other fishing equipment. These incidents can greatly affect the income and livelihood of families who rely on fishing as their primary source of living. The community’s experience highlights how coastal hazards can have a direct and lasting impact on the well-being of families.
Another potential risk identified was the area beneath the bridge, where significant soil erosion has weakened the surrounding ground. Continuous erosion, especially during heavy rains and strong water currents, may compromise the stability of the bridge, making it an area that requires close monitoring and appropriate preventive measures.
The team also visited the mangrove plantation, an important natural resource that helps protect the community from strong waves, coastal flooding, and erosion. It also provides a habitat for marine life and supports local livelihoods. Protecting and maintaining the mangroves is therefore an important part of strengthening the community’s natural defenses and resilience.
The observations and stories shared by the BResT and residents remind us that resilience begins with understanding the real risks faced by the community. Through local knowledge, active participation, and collective action, Barangay Silingan continues to take meaningful steps toward becoming safer, better prepared, and more resilient.
