“𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇! 𝑫𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕.”

Those words echoed through the room as the man standing before us spoke with confidence and a smile as radiant as a ray of sunshine greeting the world. That man was none other than Hon. Joenil “Jonel” P. Aldonza, the City Councilor of Surigao—an embodiment of leadership and a role model every younger generation should look up to.

His words seemed to send ripples of emotion through our hearts, and somehow, an imaginary light bulb lit up in our minds. “Yes, he is right!” A leader should be someone genuine, honest, and confident enough to show their true self. After all, how can you become a good leader if looking at your own reflection in the mirror feels like there is a bone stuck in your throat? How can you lead others if you are ashamed to embrace who you truly are and instead pretend to be someone else out of fear of disappointing people?

I could not help but clench my hands as my heart raced. My eyes shone brightly while looking at the man on the podium. I turned my head toward my fellow student leaders, and I saw their lips bloom into bright smiles, like begonias greeting the morning sun, reflected in my brown eyes. That was how I knew for sure that we all shared the same thoughts.

If someone had told me in the past that I would never become a good leader, I would have surely agreed with them—without any doubt. But after listening to Hon. Joenil “Jonel” P. Aldonza share his life story and how people encouraged him to run because of his genuine character, I realized that it no longer mattered. As long as I remain genuine, honest, and responsible, I can become a leader worthy of everyone's trust and support.

And I know for a fact that from this day forward, it will not only be me who changes, but everyone in that room who listened that day. We will surely become different people than we once were—individuals filled with honor.
