Before Surigao became the city we proudly call home, it was a community shaped by generations of hardworking, resilient, and hopeful people.
On August 31, 1970, Surigao officially became a chartered city through Republic Act No. 6134, marking a defining chapter in our local history.
But the story of Surigao City did not begin with the signing of a law.
It began with its people.
From a community whose life and livelihood were closely tied to our land and seas, Surigao grew through the yearsโthrough agriculture and fisheries, trade and commerce, public service, and the courage of ordinary Surigaonons who continued to build, serve, and dream despite challenges.
For 56 years, our city has witnessed generations come and go, communities transform, and new opportunities emerge.
Yet one thing remains constant: the people of Surigao.
They are the farmers and fisherfolk who sustain our communities.
The workers and entrepreneurs who keep our economy moving.
The teachers, health workers, public servants, and volunteers who serve with dedication.
The young Surigaonons who carry our hopes for tomorrow.
And every citizen who, in their own way, contributes to the continuing story of our city.
Today, as we celebrate our 56th Charter Day, we honor not only the milestone that made Surigao a city, but the people who gave meaning to that milestone.
Because a city is more than its buildings, roads, and institutions.
A city is its people.
And as we look toward the future, may we continue to build a Surigao that is smarter, more resilient, more inclusive, and more prosperousโwhile remaining rooted in the history, culture, and values that brought us here.
