NFRDI-Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center FFRDC is one of the National Centers of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI)

The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute-Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-FFRDC) conducts research on aquaculture and fishery resources management to support the development and upliftment of Taal Lake fisheries, particularly of the indigenous species, high-value fishes, and wild stock management. The center is a central breeding facility for freshwater

ornamental fishes and a prime research center for Maliputo (๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜น ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด) and other non-traditional species. Primary functions of NFRDI-FFRDC:

โ€ข Conducts research and development studies of ornamental fishes.
โ€ข Conducts research and development studies of ornamental fishes
โ€ข Develops suitable aquaculture technologies for sustainable development
โ€ข Conduct training activities and render technical assistance to fisherfolk, technicians, LGUs, and other clientele on aquaculture technology and management of fishery resources.

|| DA-NFRDI, through the Fisheries Research and Development Center (FFRDC), conducted a training on โ€œEco-friendly Grow-out Culture of Whiteleg Shrimp in Brackishwater Pondsโ€ on August 18โ€“24, 2026, in Butong, Taal, Batangas.

Implemented under the AquaBiz School-Technology Business Incubation (ABS-TBI) Program, the training aimed to strengthen participantsโ€™ technical and entrepreneurial capacities in adopting science-based, productive, and environmentally responsible shrimp farming practices. Participants included incubatees from San Teodoro and Pola, Oriental Mindoro; technical personnel from the BFAR 4B; and representatives from the private sector.

NFRDI Executive Director Dr. Maria Theresa Mutia underscored the importance of promoting science-based technologies among fisheries stakeholders. She emphasized that effective technology transfer can enhance farm productivity and livelihood opportunities while contributing to the sustainability and competitiveness of the shrimp farming and aquaculture industry.

The Package of Technology (POT) was developed by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) and underwent a series of technology verification activities at NFRDI-FFRDC.

The BS Fisheries student interns from Laguna State Polytechnic University โ€“ Los Baรฑos Campus successfully completed their internship at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute โ€“ Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDIโ€“FFRDC), Butong, Taal, Batangas, under the Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program from July 6 to August 12, 2026.

Throughout their OJT, the students gained hands-on experience in field-based fisheries data collection under the Fishery Resources Assessment in the Laguna de Bay Region project. They were assigned to various lakeshore municipalities in Laguna, where they conducted fisher, fishing boat, and fishing gear inventories and gathered fisheries-related information from local fishing communities.

The Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program is an immersion, on-the-job training (OJT), and internship program designed for junior high school, senior high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in the Philippines who wish to undergo training at NFRDI. The program is offered in two cycles each year.

The BS Fisheries student interns from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture โ€“ Calabanga successfully completed their internship from July 13 to August 11, 2026, and the BS Fisheries student interns from Romblon State University โ€“ Sta. Fe Campus also successfully completed their internship from July 14 to August 13, 2026, at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute โ€“ Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDIโ€“FFRDC) under the Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program.

Throughout their internship, the students gained valuable hands-on experience in fisheries, aquaculture, research, laboratory, farm, and office operations while strengthening their knowledge, skills, professionalism, teamwork, and confidence. The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute โ€“ Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-FFRDC) proudly congratulates the thirty-eight (38) third-year Bachelor of Science in Fisheries students from Laguna State Polytechnic University โ€“ Los Baรฑos Campus for successfully completing their 260-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) from July 06 to August 12, 2026.

Throughout their OJT, the students were trained and immersed in field-based fisheries data collection under the project Fishery Resources Assessment in the Laguna de Bay Region. They were assigned to various lakeshore municipalities in Laguna, where they conducted fisher, fishing boat, and fishing gear inventories and gathered fisheries-related information from local fishing communities.

In addition to fieldwork, the students performed data encoding, validation, and cleaning, providing them with practical experience in fisheries data management and quality assurance. Their involvement in both field and office-based activities strengthened their skills in communication, data collection, documentation, data management, and teamwork.

This On-the-Job Training forms part of NFRDIโ€™s Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program, an immersion, OJT, and internship program designed for high school (junior and senior) and college (undergraduate and graduate) students in the Philippines seeking training opportunities at NFRDI. The program is offered in two cycles each year.

The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute โ€“ Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (NFRDI-FFRDC) proudly congratulates the six (6) Bachelor of Science in Fisheries interns from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture โ€“ Calabanga Campus for successfully completing their 172-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) from July 13 to August 11, 2026, and the ten (10) interns from Romblon State University โ€“ Sta. Fe Campus for successfully completing their 240-hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) from July 14 to August 13, 2026, under the Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program.

Throughout their internship, the students immersed themselves in hands-on learning across the Marine Farm, Freshwater Farm, Laboratory, and Administrative Units. Their experience was further enriched through lectures on aquaculture, laboratory operations, and capture fisheries, as well as participation in research activities. As part of their culminating activity, they presented their research outputs to FFRDC researchers, further developing their technical skills, scientific communication, and confidence as future fisheries professionals.

The internship provided the students with an opportunity to apply what they learned in the classroom to real-world fisheries and aquaculture work while developing skills that will support their future careers.

This On-the-Job Training forms part of NFRDIโ€™s Students' Training Support (STrainS) Program, an immersion, OJT, and internship program designed for high school (junior and senior) and college (undergraduate and graduate) students in the Philippines seeking training opportunities at NFRDI.
