IN PHOTOS||Under the leadership of FCSUPT JUNITO F MASLANG, DSC, Regional Director, and under the direct supervision of FSUPT NOLITO F BEARIS, DSC, Provincial Fire Marshal of Albay, with the guidance of FSINSP JOERES REY V OYARDO, Acting City Fire Marshal, conducted a lecture to On-the-Job Training (OJT) Criminology students of Amando Cope College, Tabaco City.
FO1 George Peter B Biñas and FO1 Joebert R Venus shared their knowledge on Basic Fire Fighting. The session was designed not to turn everyone into professional firefighters, but to provide the foundational skills necessary to safely manage small-scale fires and coordinate evacuations. Focusing on how crews evaluate a burning structure and choose the right tactical response.
The lecture demystified the three primary methods used to gain the upper hand on a fire:
• The Direct Attack: The most straightforward method. When firefighters can clearly see the seat of the fire, they apply a solid or straight stream of water directly onto the burning fuel. This cools the fuel below its ignition temperature, quickly darkening the flames.
• The Indirect Attack: Used when a room is too hot to enter or the fire is obscured by heavy smoke. Firefighters direct a fog or straight stream at the ceiling from outside or a safe distance. The water instantly vaporizes into steam, absorbing massive amounts of heat and choking out the fire from the top down.
• The Combination Attack: The ultimate hybrid strategy for volatile, pre-flashover conditions. Firefighters use a specific nozzle pattern (like a 'T', 'Z', or 'O' shape) to cool the superheated smoke layer at the ceiling before sweeping down to extinguish the burning fuel on the floor.
The session concluded with a critical reminder: a successful attack isn't just about putting water on smoke. It requires rapid situational awareness, understanding thermal layering, and seamless communication between the nozzle team and ventilation crews.
After the lecture, we evaluated the students to measure their understanding and the effectiveness of the activity. This process reinforced the lesson and verified their grasp of basic firefighting techniques.
