UP Politikons proudly congratulates 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐚 and 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐢𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚, fourth-year BA Political Science students of UP Tacloban, for their paper, “𝑨 𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒚 𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑳𝒆𝒚𝒕𝒆, 𝑳𝒆𝒚𝒕𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒚,” being accepted for presentation at the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬: “𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞,” to be held at 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐤𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐤, 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 and online in 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

Their study brings a local political reality into an international academic conversation, asking us to look beyond the formal structures of governance and toward the conditions that shape who gets to participate, exercise authority, and remain in power. Through the lens of structural violence, their work situates the experiences of women barangay officials within the broader structures that may enable political violence to persist—making visible dimensions of local politics that are too often left unnamed. Their abstract will likewise be published in the conference’s Book of Abstracts by the London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research.

𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐒𝐜𝐢 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐬 🌻

On 26 August 2026, UP Politikons gathered with our freshies for a simple Kumustahan at the AS Grounds – Pili Tree, UP Tacloban.

As the academic year began on 10 August, the gathering provided an opportunity for the organization to check in on our freshies as they navigate their first weeks in the University. More than simply welcoming them into the organization, the Kumustahan with our Freshies created a space for them to share how they have been adjusting to the new academic environment, meet fellow students, and become more familiar with the community they are now part of.

Through stories, shared experiences, laughter and good food, the gathering served as a reminder that entering university is not a journey one has to navigate alone. Beyond the demands of the classroom, building connections and finding a sense of community are equally important parts of the UP experience.

𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐆 𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐍 𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄: 𝐔𝐏 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐊𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐒𝐀 𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Sa panahong patuloy na sinusubok ang diwa ng pampublikong edukasyon at ang karapatan ng bawat Iskolar ng Bayan na makilahok sa paghubog ng ating pamantasan, hindi sapat ang mga pangakong maganda lamang pakinggan. Kailangan natin ng mga lider na handang makinig, kumilos, at manindigan kasama ng sangkaestudyantehan.

Bilang isang organisasyong nagsusulong ng mapanuri at makabuluhang pag-unawa sa politika at lipunan, buong paninindigan na ipinapaabot ng UP Politikons ang aming suporta sa aming mga miyembro na sina 𝐉𝐨𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐨 para sa 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞-𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 at 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐬 para sa 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫 ng UP Tacloban Student Council.

Si 𝐉𝐨𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐨, isang BA Political Science III student, ay tumatakbo bilang Vice-Chairperson na nakatuon sa Academic and Research. Isinusulong niya ang Subject-Specific Course Tutorials sa pamamagitan ng guided review sessions, study hubs, at reviewers para sa mga estudyanteng humaharap sa academic burnout, gayundin ang Leadership Training: Capacity-Building Workshops para sa mga student-leaders. Sa pamamagitan naman ng HIMATI: Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE), layunin niyang buksan ang mas malaya at makabuluhang espasyo para sa diskurso at pagkatuto sa loob ng kampus.

Samantala, si 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐬, isang BA Political Science II student, ay tumatakbo bilang Councilor na nakatuon sa Safety and Security Committee at Nationalist Struggle Committee. Kabilang sa kanyang mga paninindigan ang pagtatatag ng Committee on the Protection of Academic Freedom and Human Rights (CAFHR), pagpapatuloy ng Free Tacloban 5 Network, pagbabalik ng Paralegal Trainings, at paglulunsad ng PAGPUKRAW upang gawing mas madaling maunawaan ng mga estudyante ang mahahalagang lokal at pambansang usapin.

Para sa UP Politikons, ang halalan ay hindi lamang pagpili ng mga pangalan sa balota. Isa itong pagpapasya kung anong uri ng pamumuno at representasyon ang nais nating itaguyod. Sa bawat boto ay may pananagutan, at sa bawat desisyon ay may kakayahang baguhin ang direksiyon ng ating pamantasan. Ang demokrasya ay hindi nabubuhay sa pananahimik at kawalang-pakialam—pinatitibay ito ng mapanuring paghusga, aktibong pakikilahok, at matatag na paninindigan.

Kaya naman, buong tiwala at paninindigan naming ineendorso sina 𝐉𝐨𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐨 para sa 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞-𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 at 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐬 para sa 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫—mga lider-estudyanteng naninindigan para sa isang konsehong tunay na boses ng mga estudyante, tagapagtanggol ng ating mga karapatan, at katuwang sa sama-samang pagkilos tungo sa isang mas makatarungan at makabuluhang UP Tacloban.

Sa Piniliay 2026, manindigan para sa pamumunong nakikinig, kumikilos, at naglilingkod.

The UP Politikons took part in IskoMerkado 2026, held on August 11–12, 2026, as UP Tacloban welcomed the new academic year.

Over the course of two days, the UP Politikons booth welcomed Freshies, continuing students, and fellow members of the UP Tacloban community, providing a space for interaction and connection throughout the event.

The UP Politikons extends its appreciation to everyone who visited the booth, made purchases, and took the time to engage with the organization throughout the two-day event.

The newest members of the BA Political Science community of UP Tacloban officially began their journey in the University through the Political Science Program Orientation on 10 August 2026 and the Campus Tour on 12 August 2026.

During the program orientation, the first-year students were introduced to the BA Political Science program, its academic community, and the faculty who will guide them throughout their undergraduate journey. The orientation was led by Ms. Claire Ed C. Bacong, Political Science Program Coordinator, together with the faculty of Political Science.

They also took part in the Campus Tour, giving them the opportunity to become more familiar with the campus, its facilities, and the spaces that will become part of their university experience.

The elevation of UP Tacloban as the 9th constituent university of the University of the Philippines System marks not only a change in institutional status, but also the beginning of changes in the university’s academic organization and governance.

Following the approval of its elevation by the UP Board of Regents on 27 May 2026, UP Tacloban has begun establishing its new academic units and corresponding leadership structures. Among these developments is the establishment of the Department of Economics and Political Science (DEPS) under the College of Social Sciences and Management (CSSM).

In line with this transition, Asst. Prof. Antonio D. Salazar, Jr. has been designated as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of DEPS, effective 1 August 2026 until 30 November 2026, or until a Department Chairperson is selected and appointed, whichever comes first, as provided under Administrative Order No. PBA-2026-106.

This institutional transition is also unfolding alongside the ongoing search for UP Tacloban’s first regular Chancellor, with the University of the Philippines Board of Regents scheduled to select the Chancellor on 27 August 2026. In the interim, Prof. Patricia B. Arinto continues to serve as Acting Chancellor.

For the Political Science community, the establishment of DEPS marks an important development in the continuing institutional growth of the program at UP Tacloban. Alongside this transition, Ms. Claire Ed C. Bacong takes on the role of Political Science Program Coordinator, contributing to the continued coordination and development of the program.

UP Politikons extends its congratulations to Asst. Prof. Antonio D. Salazar, Jr. and Ms. Claire Ed C. Bacong as they take on their respective roles in this new academic chapter.

As students and members of the Political Science community, we look forward to the continued development of the program and the academic community it serves.

Step right up! 🎢 Another academic year is here, and once again, the 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐥𝐥 is ready for another round.

College has always been a little bit like a carnival—bright, chaotic, exciting, and sometimes slightly terrifying. There are rides you’ll want to go on again, rides you’ll swear never to try twice, and moments when you’ll wonder 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞.

But that’s the thing about a ride: 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.

This year, we welcome our Freshies to their very first round, our Sophomores and Juniors back for another spin, and our Seniors to the final stretch. But as 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, this ride should also remind us of the importance of 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞.

And the Philippines certainly gives us no shortage of things to question. From the 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞 and the continuing debates on 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, to concerns over 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, and the country’s evolving geopolitical and technological landscape through initiatives like 𝐏𝐚𝐱 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚, politics continues to shape the everyday lives of Filipinos.

And here in 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐬, there is no shortage of realities that demand our attention. From the 𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫, to the threats posed by 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐧, to 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐤 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬, and communities facing continued 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭, our region holds stories that cannot simply be trimmed down into headlines.

These are the realities that make 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞, 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐲𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡.

As student journalists, may you continue to carry with you the courage to tell stories, the responsibility to seek truth, and the commitment to amplify the voices that deserve to be heard.
