The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office VIII supports and promotes sustainable corn production in Eastern Visayas under the national National Corn Program. We provide qualified farmers with quality seeds, fertilizers, training, technical assistance, and post-harvest support — helping them grow corn for food, animal feed, and industrial uses. Our mission is to help build a productive, resilient and competitive corn industry — empowering farmers, improving livelihoods, and contributing to food security in our region. We only support corn production at the farm level by assisting farmers and stakeholders. For corn supply, we suggest contacting local corn growers, farmers’ cooperatives, or private suppliers. To empower local agricultural communities, the Corn Program successfully concluded a two-day Soybean Technology Demonstration Training on August 19–20, 2026, at the OMAS Demonstration Farm in Salcedo, Eastern Samar.

The initiative provided local farmers with hands-on experience in modern cultivation strategies, sustainable soil management, and efficient post-harvest processing. By integrating these science-based practices, participants are now better equipped to maximize their soybean yields, minimize production costs, and unlock higher-value market opportunities.

This capacity-building effort underscores the DA’s ongoing commitment to fostering agricultural resilience and long-term financial stability for producers across the province.

The Corn Program conducted a Cassava Technology Demonstration Training on August 19–20, 2026, at the Communal Area, Brgy. President Roxas, Giporlos, Eastern Samar, specifically for members of the President Roxas Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association.

This two-day initiative equipped local farmers with modern cultivation techniques, sustainable soil management, and efficient post-harvest processing. By adopting these scientific practices, participating association members gained essential skills to boost crop yields, lower farm input costs, and secure higher market returns for long-term financial stability.

On August 17–18, 2026, a two-day Sorghum Technology Demonstration Training was held at the Multi-purpose Hall in Sitio Malaihao, Brgy. Bahay, San Miguel, Leyte. Supported by expert guidance from a DA San Jorge Station resource speaker, the program delivered targeted instruction on sustainable management, modern field operations, and crop utilization to advance sustainable agricultural development in the municipality.

A productive two-day training on Sorghum Technology Demonstration was conducted on August 17–18, 2026, at the Barangay Hall in Barangay Roxas, Burauen, Leyte.

Featuring a resource speaker from the DA San Jorge Station, the hands-on activity equipped local farmers with sustainable sorghum production techniques, efficient field management practices, and crop utilization strategies to boost farm productivity and foster climate-resilient agriculture in the community.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬: 𝐃𝐀, 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 19𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 – 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Maize Federation Inc. (PhilMaize) successfully conducted the 19th Philippine National Corn Congress – Visayas Cluster from August 10 to 14, 2026, at the Sarrosa International Hotel and Residence Suites in Cebu City.

Carrying the theme "Empowering Farmers thru Intensive Post-Harvest Establishment and Market Access in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao," the congress brought together public officials, industry stakeholders, and local growers from Regions VI, VII, VIII, and the Negros Island Region. Notably, Region VIII mobilized a 51-member delegation composed of DA-RFO VIII personnel, ATI-RTC 8 representatives, local government agricultural officers, and farmer-leaders to ensure ground-level needs were reflected in discussions.

Addressing participants, PhilMaize President Romualdo J. Elvira Jr. emphasized that meaningful economic growth must start in rural farming communities, highlighting the agricultural heritage and critical role of indigenous communities. Key sessions focused on boosting farm incomes through modern machinery, upgraded post-harvest facilities, and direct market linkages.

The five-day program included interactive trade exhibits, open dialogue forums between farmers and sector leaders, and cultural events, including the Kamaize Got Talent competition won by Ms. Anita Dadulla of the Balangkayan Agriculture Cooperative. Delegates returned to their respective provinces with updated technical knowledge, innovative approaches, and strengthened collaborative networks to advance the local corn industry.

To advance sustainable food production and empower local agricultural organizations, the DA RFO VIII Corn Program conducted a two-day Cassava Technology Demonstration Training on August 6–7, 2026, at the Brgy. Tigbao Gym, Libagon, Southern Leyte.

The activity trained 20 active farmer-participants from the Tigbao United Farmers and Fisherfolk Association (TUFFA) on high-yielding cassava production standards, integrated pest management, and updated field practices.

During the interactive sessions, farmer-participants highlighted key issues and concerns surrounding local corn and cassava planting, prompting actionable technical solutions from the team to maximize farm profitability and productivity.

The DA RFO VIII Corn Program successfully conducted a Biological Control Agents Earwig Training on August 4–5, 2026, at the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Center (PAFEC), Brgy. Galutan, Catarman, Northern Samar.

The 2-day activity trained local farmers in the mass production and field utilization of earwigs—promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to protect corn crops naturally and reduce pesticide dependency.
