Pinangunahan ng Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) North Cotabato sa pamumuno ni Provincial Agriculturist Engr. Elena E. Ragonton, MPA ang Meeting of City/Municipal Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Coordinators na isinagawa sa Agri Center ng OPAG North Cotabato upang talakayin ang historical pest data at pest advisories on possible insect pests to occur during El NiΓ±o phenomenon.

Isa sa mga naging agenda ng pagpupulong ay ang presentation ng β€œ2026 Provincial Plans and Programs on Crop Protection” na inilahad ni Rogaya S. Acoy, Provincial IPM Coordinator, kung saan tinalakay ang mga pangunahing programa at interventions ng lalawigan para sa pagpapalakas ng pest surveillance, crop protection activities, at climate-resilient agriculture initiatives bilang paghahanda sa posibleng epekto ng El NiΓ±o sa sektor ng agrikultura.

Tinalakay ni RCPC Chief Dr. Ray A. Rodriguez ang historical pest incidence data na nagpapakita ng pagtaas ng insidente ng mga pangunahing peste ng pananim tuwing may prolonged dry spell at mataas na temperatura dulot ng El NiΓ±o. Ayon sa forecast ng PAGASA, may mataas na posibilidad na mabuo ang El NiΓ±o pagsapit ng Hunyo 2026 at maaaring magpatuloy hanggang sa mga susunod na buwan, dahilan upang paigtingin ang paghahanda at monitoring activities ng mga lokal na pamahalaan at agricultural offices.

Batay sa historical pest data, kabilang sa mga pangunahing pesteng naobserbahan sa panahon ng El NiΓ±o ang Brown Planthopper (BPH), Rice Black Bug (RBB), Stem Borers, Rice Bugs, rodents, insect defoliators, leaf folder, at Fall Armyworm (FAW).

Binigyang-diin din sa pagpupulong ang pest advisories hinggil sa mga posibleng insect pests na maaaring muling magkaroon ng outbreaks habang nagpapatuloy ang El NiΓ±o conditions. Kabilang dito ang Fall Armyworm sa mais at high-value crops, Brown Planthopper at Rice Black Bug sa palay, pati na rin ang pagdami ng rodents dulot ng kakulangan sa tubig at pagkain sa natural habitats.

Kaugnay nito, inirekomenda ang pagpapalakas ng climate-based pest surveillance, regular field monitoring, synchronized planting, crop rotation, paggamit ng pest-resistant at drought-tolerant varieties at pagpapatupad ng Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies upang maagapan ang posibleng paglala ng infestation at maprotektahan ang produksyon ng agrikultura sa lalawigan.

Dinaluhan ang aktibidad nina RCPC Chief Dr. Ray A. Rodriguez at Ms. Meliza B. Caramat, Senior Science Research Specialist at Diagnostic Laboratory Unit Head, na nagbigay ng mahahalagang teknikal na updates at rekomendasyon ukol sa pest monitoring, diagnostics, at mitigation strategies laban sa epekto ng El NiΓ±o.

Tinalakay rin sa pagpupulong ang nalalapit na Farmers Forum na gaganapin sa Hunyo 22, 2026 kasabay ng Pest Management Council of the Philippines (PMCP) and Scientific Conference sa General Santos City. Kabilang sa mga paghahandaan ang pagbibigay ng updates sa pest management technologies, climate-resilient agriculture strategies, at ang pagpili ng Outstanding Farmer Awardee bilang pagkilala sa mga magsasakang may natatanging kontribusyon sa sustainable crop production at integrated pest management practices.

The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office XII through the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), headed by Dr. Ray Rodriguez, Chief of RCPC, conducted a collaborative meeting with Dr. Gina D. Balleras, Research and Development Coordinator of PhilRice Midsayap, regarding the development of protocols for liquid Entomopathogenic fungi as sustainable biological control agents against major rice pests.

The collaboration also highlighted the integration of innovative technologies such as the use of IoT for data gathering of edaphic factors and microclimate conditions to provide location-specific pest advisories and identify pest hotspots. In addition, the team explored the use of drone-assisted application of liquid biological control agents (BCA) to improve efficiency, precision, and sustainability in pest management practices.

Both institutions also discussed the formulation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration in research and technology development. A follow-up meeting will likewise be conducted for the orientation and demonstration of the devices and technologies to be utilized in the project.

The activity underscores the commitment of both institutions in promoting eco-friendly, science-based, and technology-driven solutions to support rice farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.

On May 19-21, 2026 held at The Grand Summit Hotel, General Santos City. Through the collaborative initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization in the Philippines and the Food Development Center, the β€œTraining on ISO/IEC 17025 for Mindanao Cluster – Track 2” was successfully conducted with the active participation of the Regional Crop Protection Center, Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Regional Soils Laboratory, and Feed Chemical Analysis Laboratory.

Together with our Integrated Laboratories Division Chief, Dr. Jeneffer R. Bulawan, participants strengthened their knowledge and technical competencies on laboratory quality assurance systems and internationally recognized standards through the following sessions:

The Department of Agriculture 12- Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-12 RCPC) served as Resource Speaker on the topic "Integrated Pest Management" during the training on the Package of Technology (POT) for Red Onion Production, conducted by FOD on High Value Crops Development Programs (HVCDP). The two-day activity held on May 19-20, 2026 at Barangay Albagan, Tampakan, South Cotabato.

This was participated by Albagan farmers association and indigenous people of Albagan.

The RCPC continuous support on the technical assistance on the pest management strategies for all types of agricultural crops.

In Photos| The Regional Crop Protection Center XII successfully conducted the Training Workshop on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of Corn in Region XII on May 13–15, 2026, gathering agricultural practitioners and stakeholders in strengthening sustainable and science-based pest management strategies for corn production in the region.

The activity commenced with the welcome remarks of Abas E. Abdula, SSRS, who warmly welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of continuous learning, collaboration, and capacity-building among agricultural frontliners in addressing emerging pest and disease concerns affecting corn production in Region XII.

An inspiring opening message was delivered by Ray A. Rodriguez, Ph.D., Chief of RCPC, highlighting the vital role of Integrated Pest Management in ensuring food security, minimizing crop losses, and promoting environmentally sound agricultural practices. He also encouraged the participants to apply the knowledge and technologies learned during the workshop in their respective areas and communities.

The participants were further motivated through the inspirational message of Jeneffer R. Bulawan, DVM, Chief of ILD, who underscored the significance of commitment, cooperation, and innovation in achieving resilient and sustainable agricultural development. She also recognized the importance of empowering agricultural workers and farmers through technical trainings and extension activities.

The technical sessions were facilitated by distinguished resource speakers including Princes Razel T. Dioso, SRS I on IPM Principles and the Importance and Uses of Biological Control Agents; John Maverick Estrella, Agri Tech II on Major Pests and Diseases of Corn in Region XII; and Adrian Jade C. Padal, Agri Tech I on Damage Assessment of Corn.

The workshop also featured interactive group workshops, presentation of outputs, synthesis and evaluation activities, and sharing of participants’ impressions which further enriched the learning experience of the attendees.

The activity formally concluded through the closing remarks of Meliza B. Caramat, SSRS, who expressed gratitude to all participants, organizers, and resource speakers for their active participation and unwavering support in the success of the training workshop. Ang Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office XII – Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), sa pamamagitan ng Mindanao Inclusive Agriculture Development Project (MIADP), ay nagbigay ng teknikal na suporta sa mga Indigenous Peoples (IP) coffee farmers mula sa Malungon at Senator Ninoy Aquino sa isinagawang capacity-building activity noong Mayo 11–13, 2026 sa General Santos City.

Layunin ng tatlong araw na aktibidad na mapalawak ang kaalaman at kakayahan ng mga IP coffee farmers hinggil sa sustainable coffee production, lalo na sa tamang pamamahala ng mga peste at sakit na nakaaapekto sa produksyon ng kape sa rehiyon. Naging daan din ito upang mapalakas ang kamalayan ng mga magsasaka sa paggamit ng mga siyentipiko at makakalikasang pamamaraan sa crop protection at farm management.

Bilang bahagi ng lecture sessions, tinalakay ni Dr. Ray Rodriguez, Chief ng Regional Crop Protection Center, ang mga pangunahing hamon sa produksyon ng kape, partikular ang pagdami ng mga insect pests at sakit sa taniman ng kape. Binigyang-diin niya ang kahalagahan ng maagang pagtukoy, regular na field monitoring, at agarang pagpapatupad ng naaangkop na intervention measures upang mabawasan ang pinsala at mapataas ang produksyon.

Samantala, ibinahagi naman ni Ms. Meliza Caramat, Senior Science Research Specialist, ang mga prinsipyo at pamamaraan ng Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Tinalakay niya ang paggamit ng mga makakalikasang, episyente, at sustenableng pamamaraan sa pagkontrol ng peste, kabilang ang cultural, biological, mechanical, at chemical control methods upang mabawasan ang infestation habang pinangangalagaan ang kapaligiran at mga kapaki-pakinabang na organismo.

Upang higit na mapalawak ang praktikal na kaalaman ng mga kalahok, nagsagawa rin ng hands-on activities at field demonstrations sa DA-Tupi Research and Experiment Station sa Bololmala, Tupi. Dito ay ginabayan ang mga IP coffee farmers sa tamang sampling techniques, field monitoring procedures, at iba pang recommended crop protection practices na mahalaga upang mapanatiling malusog at produktibo ang kanilang mga taniman ng kape.

Sa pamamagitan ng aktibong pakikilahok sa MIADP capacity-building activity, muling pinagtibay ng Regional Crop Protection Center ang kanilang pangako sa pagsusulong ng sustainable at matatag na produksyon ng kape sa Region XII sa pamamagitan ng tuloy-tuloy na pagbibigay ng teknikal na suporta, research-based extension services, at pagpapalakas ng mga crop protection initiatives para sa mga magsasaka.

Isinagawa ngayong araw, Mayo 6, 2026, ang isang mahalagang pagpupulong sa Regional Crop Protection Center kasama si ILD Chief Dr. Jeneffer R. Bulawan upang talakayin ang mga pangunahing usapin kaugnay ng implementasyon ng mga programa at serbisyo ng tanggapan.

Kabilang sa mga natalakay ang status ng 2025 continuing fund utilization, updates sa 2026 funds, finalization ng performance standards alinsunod sa Strategic Performance Management System (SPMS) ng Civil Service Commission, at ang mga target para sa IPCR mula Hunyo hanggang Disyembre.

Partikular ding binigyang-diin ang pagtatakda ng performance standards para sa mga pangunahing tungkulin ng RCPC tulad ng production at distribution ng biological control agents, plant pest monitoring and surveillance, diagnostic services, at training and extension services upang mas mapahusay ang kalidad, kahusayan, at pagiging napapanahon ng serbisyo.

Napag-usapan din ang pagpapalakas ng pest surveillance and monitoring sa buong rehiyon sa pakikipagtulungan sa Regulatory Division upang masiguro ang agarang pagbibigay ng interventions, angkop na management practices, at mabilis na pagtugon sa mga umuusbong na peste at sakit ng halaman.

Tinalakay rin ang plano sa pagtatayo at pagpapahusay ng diagnostic laboratory structures na dapat nakaayon sa mga pamantayan ng ISO 17025 upang matiyak ang mataas na kalidad at kredibilidad ng laboratory services.

Ang pagpupulong na ito ay patunay ng patuloy na koordinasyon at pagtutulungan tungo sa mas epektibong pagpapatupad ng mga programa para sa kapakinabangan ng sektor ng agrikultura.

On May 5, The Regional Crop Protection Center Staff Attended and Served as Resource Person on the Harvest Festival for Adaptive Balanced Fertilization (ABFS) – Corn at Brgy. Bai Saripinang, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat.

This meaningful activity gathered farmers, stakeholders, and agricultural practitioners to promote the adoption of science-based and site-specific nutrient management practices for improved corn productivity and sustainable farming systems.

Isinagawa ang site assessment at validation ng Biocontrol Facility sa Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG)- Sarangani, sa pangunguna ni RCPC Chief Dr. Ray A. Rodriguez. Layunin ng nasabing pagbisita na suriin ang kasalukuyang laboratory facilities at matukoy ang mga kinakailangang kagamitan para sa produksyon ng Metarhizium, isang mahalagang biocontrol agent laban sa mga peste sa pananim.

Ang inisyatibong ito ay bahagi ng patuloy na pagsisikap ng DA-RFO XII, sa ilalim ng pamumuno ni Director John B. Pascual, DVM, na palakasin ang crop protection sa rehiyon. Sa pamamagitan ng pagpapalawak ng access ng mga magsasaka sa ligtas at epektibong biocontrol agents, inaasahang mapapabuti ang pamamahala laban sa mga sakit at peste sa agrikultura. In Photos | The Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) actively participated in the Online Retooling on the PRIME Pest Surveillance Protocol held on April 22–23, 2026.

This activity aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of technical staff in implementing standardized pest surveillance, monitoring, and reporting systems under the PRIME Project. Through this retooling, RCPC personnel are better equipped to ensure accurate data collection, timely pest detection, and effective response strategies to support farmers in the region.

The training highlighted updated protocols, harmonized procedures, and practical approaches to improve pest management effortsβ€”contributing to sustainable rice production and food security.
