The National Irrigation Administration Region VII continues to advance agricultural sustainability and water security in Siquijor through progressive infrastructure upgrades under the Lazi-Maria Small Irrigation Project (SIP).

Its ongoing 2026 phase, funded at ₱8.3 million, covers the replacement of solar panels and submersible pumps, construction of a pumphouse and perimeter fencing, and installation of pipeline distribution facilities in Maria.

These improvements build on earlier investments that expanded the irrigation network and introduced solar-powered pumping technology for 200 hectares of farmland.

The project benefits 36 farmers from Barangays Nabutay, Liloan and Saguing under the NabLiSa Irrigators Association Inc., led by President Mario C. Colubio.

By improving the system’s capacity to deliver water to farms, NIA VII aims to help farmers manage their cropping schedules, sustain production during dry spells and make better use of available water resources.

While water remains available, some farmers in Central Visayas have started land preparation for the next cropping season, taking proactive steps to maximize available resources ahead of the expected El Niño.

In Bohol, members of Nagkahiusang Mag-uuma sa Tinubdan Irrigators Association (IA) in Balilihan and Bugang Norte-Loctob IA Inc. in Bilar are already plowing their rice fields. While farmers under Luan Communal Irrigation System in Canaway, Siaton, Negros Oriental, are also undertaking land preparation.

In Cebu, the Talavera Toledo Pump IA and Sto. Nino Spring IA in Toledo City, Danasan IA and Daan Paz IA in Camotes Island, Lanao Daanbantayan IA Inc. in Daanbantayan, and Sta. Rita IA Inc. in Asturias also tilled their fields for high-value crop production.

NIA urges all IAs to follow agreed schedules and encourages farmers in programmed areas to use available water supply wisely. Those in areas not programmed...

TUBURAN, CEBU | Through NIA Region VII’s convergence efforts, DOLE’s 10-day TUPAD program supported the garden’s land preparation, providing temporary employment while helping the IA prepare for the looming El Niño.

Led by Amatugan Farmers Irrigators Association (IA) President Eva C. Armodia, the 300-square-meter garden will grow eggplant, tomato, pepino, and squash, with its potential benefits reaching 86 IA members and their families.

The IA provided the plastic mulch, while seeds and other inputs are expected from the Department of Agriculture and the LGU Tuburan. NIA irrigation water will serve as the garden’s primary water source.

More than improving their surroundings, the initiative shows how government convergence and farmers’ collective efforts can turn available land into an opportunity for livelihood and climate resilience.

The ₱1.8-billion Malinao Dam Improvement Project (MDIP) in Pilar, Bohol aims to increase the dam’s storage capacity from 5 million to approximately 9 million cubic meters—improving irrigation water availability for 799 farmers across 740 hectares of farmland and strengthening flood protection along the Wahig River.

The project supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen water resource management through resilient water infrastructure.

PILAR, Bohol — The National Irrigation Administration Region VII is upgrading the Malinao Irrigation System through the ₱1.8-billion Malinao Dam Improvement Project (MDIP) to strengthen irrigation supply in Bohol, in line with the President’s directive to ensure reliable irrigation for farmers.

The project will increase the dam’s water storage capacity from 5 million cubic meters (mcm) to approximately 9 mcm. This will be achieved by modifying the existing bathtub spillway and constructing an auxiliary spillway, both equipped with automated rubber weirs that can raise the spillway crest by up to two meters.

The expanded capacity is expected to improve irrigation service to 740 hectares of farmland, benefiting 799 farmers, particularly those at canal tail ends.

“Malinao Dam has limited storage capacity due to its relatively small reservoir and years of siltation since it began operating in 1996. Through MDIP, we can strengthen water storage and management,” said Malinao Irrigation System Head Felix Guioguio.

As of September 30, 2026, Phase 1 was 30% complete and Phase 2 was 13% complete, with both ahead of schedule. Project completion is targeted in 2028, paving the way for more reliable irrigation and improved flood protection for farming communities in Bohol.
