The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), led by Gov. Aris Aumentado, commended the swift and coordinated response of authorities following the interception of 35 illegally transported live piglets in Getafe on July 15, 2026, strengthening efforts to protect the province from African Swine Fever (ASF).

Personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Getafe and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Substation Getafe initially intercepted 26 piglets aboard FBCA Koy and Tin Express without the required documents. Follow-up operations in Barangay Salog recovered nine more piglets, bringing the total to 35.

The animals, traced to Barangay Sonog, San Francisco, Cebu, were intended for delivery to Bohol in violation of Executive Order No. 28, signed by Gov. Aumentado, imposing a 60-day temporary ban on the entry of live pigs and pork products.

The piglets were turned over to the Getafe Municipal ASF Inter-Agency Task Force through the Municipal Agriculture Office, in coordination with the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), before their eventual turnover to the OPV for proper disposition following veterinary and biosecurity protocols. The vessel remains under PCG custody pending investigation.

The operation reinforces the PGBh's commitment to safeguarding agriculture, food security, and livelihoods under its Strategic Governance Roadmap in Bohol, the country's first UNESCO Global Geopark.

Authorities successfully intercepted an illegal transport of 35 live piglets on July 15, 2026, according to a report released by the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV).

The joint enforcement operation was carried out by the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Getafe and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Getafe Substation after authorities intercepted 26 live piglets being transported aboard FBCA Koy and Tin Express.

It was confirmed that the shipment of the piglets was illegal, as there was no proper documentation.

Initial investigations revealed that the piglets originated from Barangay Sonog, located in San Francisco, a town situated on Pacijan Island, which is part of the Camotes group of islands in Cebu.

The live piglets were intended for delivery to Bohol, in violation of the provinceโ€™s animal movement regulations based on the latest Executive Order (EO) No. 28 signed by Gov. Aris Aumentado on July 3.

The EO has imposed a 60-day temporary ban on the entry of live pigs, pork, pork products, and other regulated commodities following confirmed African Swine Fever (ASF) cases in Negros Island.

Furthermore, upon learning that additional piglets from the same shipment had already been unloaded, authorities immediately conducted follow-up operations in Barangay Salog, Getafe.

The follow-up operation successfully traced and secured nine more live piglets, bringing the total number of intercepted animals to 35.

All 35 live piglets remained in the custody of the concerned authorities while the mandatory 24-hour holding period was observed.

The animals were also immediately transferred to a Local Government Unit (LGU) vehicle for safe transport and were turned over to the Getafe Municipal ASF Inter-Agency Task Force.

This was made possible through coordination with the Municipal Agriculture Office and the OPV, headed by Dr. Meydallyn Paman, with the animals having undergone the required quarantine and biosecurity procedures pending further disposition.

Upon completion of the required holding period, the animals were formally turned over to the OPV for proper disposition through depopulation in accordance with existing veterinary laws, rules, regulations, and established disease prevention and control protocols.

Furthermore, the vessel involved in the illegal transport was placed under the custody of the PCG pending further investigation and appropriate action by the concerned authorities.

The operation prevented the unauthorized entry of the animals into the province and reinforced Boholโ€™s intensified efforts to protect its livestock industry from the threat of ASF.

Gov. Aumentado commended the swift and coordinated response of the first responders and apprehending authorities, particularly the personnel of the PNP-Getafe and the PCG Substation Getafe.

The successful operation reflects the PGBhโ€™s steadfast commitment to protecting every Boholano through proactive governance and strengthened biosecurity measures, aligned with its Strategic Governance Roadmap.

These law enforcement initiatives are to ensure resilient agriculture, protection of livelihoods, and food security in Bohol, a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Wild birds may carry avian influenza and spread it to other birds without showing signs of illness. Protect your poultry by preventing contact with wild birds. Stay watchful for unusual wild bird deaths or sick birds in your area, and report them to your local authorities immediately. Early reporting supports faster response efforts and helps protect poultry, wild birds, and our communities from the spread of avian influenza.

~ The Provincial Government of Bohol, through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), is pleased to share that the recent Avian Influenza (AI) surveillance activities conducted in coordination with the Department of Agriculture โ€“ Regional Field Office VII (DA-RFO VII), Local Government Units (LGUs), and poultry stakeholders have contributed to maintaining the favorable Avian Influenza status of Bohol and Region VII.
Following continued negative surveillance results and the absence of reported Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases in Region VII, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has issued Memorandum Circular No. 25, Series of 2026, temporarily waiving Avian Influenza laboratory testing per shipment for live poultry, other bird species, eggs, poultry products, and poultry by-products (except live ducks) originating from Region VII for local movement purposes until 23 September 2026.
This development highlights the importance of sustained disease surveillance, early detection, strict biosecurity practices, and strong collaboration among poultry raisers, LGUs, DA-RFO VII, and the OPV.
Benefits to poultry stakeholders include:
โ€ข Reduced transport-related testing requirements;
โ€ข Lower transaction costs and processing delays; and
โ€ข Improved movement and market access for poultry commodities.
๐Ÿ“Œ IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
This waiver primarily facilitates the OUTBOUND movement or PAGPAGAWAS of eligible poultry commodities originating from Bohol and other areas of Region VII.
The waiver applies only to the Avian Influenza laboratory testing requirement per shipment and does not exempt shippers, traders, or transporters from complying with other applicable veterinary quarantine, inspection, shipping, documentary, and regulatory requirements.
Likewise, existing entry, acceptance, inspection, and biosecurity requirements of the Province of Bohol for poultry, poultry products, and related commodities entering the province remain in effect unless otherwise amended through separate official issuances.
The Provincial Government of Bohol, through the OPV, reminds all poultry raisers, traders, and stakeholders that continued compliance with biosecurity measures, disease reporting, and surveillance activities remains essential to protect the poultry industry and sustain the favorable disease status of Bohol and Region VII.
The Provincial Government of Bohol, through the OPV, extends its sincere appreciation to DA-RFO VII, LGUs, Municipal Agriculture Offices, and City Agriculture and Veterinary Office, poultry raisers, and all partners whose cooperation and commitment continue to safeguard poultry health, farmer livelihoods, and food security.

The Provincial Government of Bohol thru the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, in coordination with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the Department of Agricultureโ€“Regional Field Office 7 (DA-RFO7), facilitated the distribution of the second batch of financial assistance amounting to โ‚ฑ7.52 million to 302 African Swine Fever (ASF)-affected farmers on May 26, 2026, at the Bohol Cultural Center in Tagbilaran City.

The financial assistance was sourced from the funds of Bureau of Animal Industry with compensation rates of โ‚ฑ12,000 for each sow or boar, โ‚ฑ8,000 for each fattener, and โ‚ฑ4,000 for each weanling. Beneficiaries came from 17 municipalities across the province and their documents were reviewed by the personnel from the OPV prior to submission to the DARFO7.

Provincial Administrator Asteria C. Caberte expressed gratitude to the hog raisers for their cooperation in complying with government protocols during the ASF outbreak. She emphasized that Bohol currently has zero active ASF cases and reminded the raisers to continue observing proper biosecurity measures while drawing lessons from the previous outbreaks to prevent future occurrences.

Dr. Christopher Jay Tanduyan also delivered a brief presentation highlighting the importance of farm biosecurity as the Provincial Government continues to intensify efforts toward the reclassification of the ASF status of municipalities across the province.

The financial assistance is part of the commitment of the Department of Agriculture and the Provincial Government of Bohol under the leadership of Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado to support the recovery of Boholโ€™s swine industry.
